Germany has said Russia was responsible for last month’s drone attack at Leipzig’s airport.
A drone carrying an explosive device was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany, close to Ukrainian cargo planes, on 4 August.
Well color me shocked and surprised. I never thought they would have the guts to say it out loud. Now if some of the other EU countries would admit Russia was behind their “accidents”.
Like the Italian munition plant explosion…
100% with you, but it is different if a country officially points the finger. I hope that happens more now, especially with the new bomb findinga today in Brandenburg. Vulkangruppe, my ass.
I’m at least glad that the Russians seem so incompetent that their operations could plausibly attributed to a bunch of punks.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul … said he would order the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn, and the contract for the Russian House in Berlin will also be terminated - which many observers have said has been used for espionage and to spread Russian propaganda.
I’m pretty baffled by this.
The spymasters say Russia is testing NATO’s resolve. But all these tests have made NATO stronger. E.g. the invasion of Ukraine pushed Sweden and Finland to join NATO.
They also say Russia is planning something major, soon, to really drive a wedge between countries in NATO. I’m guessing it will be an immigration crisis à la Ceuta, which in the past has caused Schengen countries to reactivate border controls.
Even that has been pretty weak tea if the mission is the dismantling of NATO or the EU.
Russia has mostly succeeded in uniting its foes by being an external antagonist.
My guess: They’re slowly pushing these hybrid attacks until one of the countries trigger Article 5. But since the attack won’t be obviously directly linked to Russia, it gives the Tangerine Palpatine (saw this nickname in another comment, and by God I love it) a way to say “we’re not coming to your aid against Russia, because you can’t prove it’s them” leaving Europe to fend for itself.

It’s a bad example. The invasion of Ukraine was not done to test NATO’s resolve. Russia is sending drones into NATO’s airspace to test their response. So far NATO did not respond in any meaningful way. People died in Poland as a result of Russian attacks on Ukraine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_missile_explosion_in_Poland), Russian drones hit civilians targets in Romania and keep entering Polish airspace. What is NATO doing? Nothing.
I’m guessing it will be an immigration crisis à la Ceuta
They already tried this and countries responded by securing the border. I don’t think Russia will suddenly mobilize thousands of migrants on a border with Poland. I don’t think any spy agency is suggesting something like that. What they are suggesting is some sort of false flag operation and military response. My bet is on some Baltic country or Poland. It will not be a full scale invasion but probably some shooting across the border or quick incursion to take some prisoners. And it will not be done to “drive a wedge between countries in NATO”. It will be done to see if NATO members are serious about defending each other.
Unfortunately NATO is now run by Trump’s puppet Mark Rutte. This clown is so far up Trump’s ass that he can lick his tonsils.
And since the US president is a Russian asset or Pinocchio more likely, NATO won’t do shit. Can’t upset daddy Trump as Rutte so eloquently put it.
Currently, Putin could use a NATO response, depending on what it is, as justification for mobilization and continuing his war. Probing NATO is not only about disrupting NATO.
You can see in Ukraine how they use terror to break Ukraine, not realizing it makes them more committed and united. The same flaw is in their theory and approach towards European nations. They hope sabotage and terror will push insecurity and fear, disagreement and reduction of support.
This airport is apparently a significant military or Ukraine support hub. So there is a pretty direct benefit too, as well as hope of criticism of support to Ukraine, because of security or economic risk.
An attack on drone production that sends to Ukraine would fulfill multiple goals in their eyes. A retaliation could give justification for mobilization and continuation.
Personally, even in the event of a direct attack with soldiers on land, I expect NATO and EU will act decisive but careful. Not necessarily with retaliation, only with defense. They’re driven by policy and reason. Unlike Russia.
Which, despite plenty of evidence and indication, continues the same strategy at great loss, cannibalizing and destroying itself. Even the “elite” corruption gains, which are still a thing, becomes increasingly volatile and at risk.
Largely agree, but the previous mobilization remains in effect.
Not sure what he could do to convince remaining military-age men to willingly jump into the meat grinder.
There was recent news of mire than 100k Russian men fleeing the country, largely because they feared escalating mobilisation in the days after the upcoming elections…
Yeah… On the surface that may be true. But it would be hard to say that NATO is as strong as it was ten years ago, even if you include the added members.
Replicating American right wing extremism in Europe is more dangerous to NATO than any kind of actual invasion. Having the adf take off the same way maga did in the US would be devastating to NATO.
Respectfully disagree. Before Ukraine 2014, NATO was the answer to a question that wasn’t really relevant anymore.
Even after 2014, NATO largely shrugged and decided that because of Sevastopol, Crimea was basically Russia’s anyway.
Ukraine 2022 has seen NATO pull together arguably more than any other time in history. And Ukraine isn’t even a member.
Donald’s attempts to weaken it may have strengthened it. He’s demanding Europe raise spending and take responsibility. Great. His threats to throw Europe to the wolves are more about extracting bribes and concessions. And to an extent, justifying moving chess pieces to Iran and South America.
Even if he somehow completely pulled America out of NATO, that can be undone by the next administration. And even if it can’t, there’s nothing that says America couldn’t still come to the aid of Europe.
Respectfully disagree. Before Ukraine 2014, NATO was the answer to a question that wasn’t really relevant anymore.
I mean, yeah. That was the purpose. Bush Jr. decided in 2008 that Ukraine and Georgia are going to join Nato, and Russia said they will do everything they can to prevent that. 2014, one coup later, we’re at war. And very clearly Germany is at war with Russia, sending war material to Ukraine.
Has it made Europe and Nato stronger? It make Nato relevant again. It made EU and Nato the same. Now Nato 3.0 is already ratified to take 5% GDP. You think this will make Europe stronger? Lack of energy imports, now with Iran too, no fertilizer with 40% less food production predicted for 2027, AI bubble popping soon… where do you see strength?
I see Europe as finished with a completely inevitable slide to fascism by now and breaking apart. It’s going to be Le Pen, AFD and UKIP ruling next. Most realist thinkers and analysts and professors from the cold war era is saying the Ukraine war was the worst blunder in the history of Nato. It was supposed to prevent war, not provoke it.
And media and discourse has completely degenerated. Any voice to the contrary is immediately maligned as a Russian propagandists or bot. You get fired for having this opinion today. This is stronger? I thought liberalism made Europe strong but that is gone now. Meanwhile our Nato emperor is stealing Venezuela’s oil, good thing Machado won that nobel peace price lol. But somehow Nato is benevolent and has to be spread to all corners of the earth. You people are completely insane to me.
Ukraine has been turned into a quasi-landlocked country and 90% of it’s warehouses have been bombed in retaliation to the wildberry escalations. General Kellog says conscription of women is a feminist issue lol. Lets just hope the winter will be incredibly mild.
So you’re right, Nato was the answer to a question that wasn’t relevant any more, and we engineered the situation to bring us back into a new cold war. Thanks Obama.
If you believe NATO is simply a puppet of the US, why didn’t Turkey, France or Germany participate in the war in Iraq? Why didn’t they obey their “emperor’s” orders?
I think you have a problem conflating a voluntary defensive organization with the actions of some of its members.
The US is an evil, imperialist power. So is Russia. For smaller countries bordering Russia, the only protection they have from Russian aggression is NATO.
Ukraine decided to try to join the EU. They even agreed not to join NATO. Russia decided that Ukraine was their imperial property and wanted to deny it self determination so started a war that has caused over a million casualties.
Any attempted justification of that is a justification of fascism and imperialism. And there’s only one thing to do with fascists…
Your confusion comes from expecting logic from authoritarianism.
All of these “strongman” style dictators are surrounded by yes-men bootlickers who never tell the dictator the actual truth, because telling the truth is what got their predecessor fired.
Ego ahead of all else, thinking that might makes right even when reality disagrees on both counts.
Ikr, they should have sent a convoy to Brussels instead. That would have been way smarter.
Who who’d have guessed out of all the actors capable and willing to do this it was them. /s
Wadephul said he had summoned the Russia’s ambassador to Germany, Sergei Nechayev.
Damn, we’ve gone full-circle from “Russia” and “the Ukraine” to “Ukraine” and “the Russia”.
the [...] ambassadorin this case, but I like your thinking :)It’s either “the russian ambassador” or “Russia’s ambassador”, but not “the Russia’s ambassador”.
so it begins
Giddyup
Quick, buy more gas from them!
I am fairly certain Germany isn’t buying gas from Russia. I think that’s countries like Turkey and Poland
And what will they do? Same as after Crimea, just try and strengthen their bond with Russia? Kneel to the height of Pootin’s crotch?
I’m usually in for these kind of exaggerations, but wow, where the fuck have you been in the last 4 years?
From the creators of Reichstag fire
Ah your from lemmy.ml …
