Quite honestly, I don’t think it makes sense to be naïve about the plans of power players like Lagarde. I’d bet money that deregulation is a major component of this.

2. There is a major difference between committing a genocide and watching/minorly aiding another nation committing a genocide. I’d argue that German influence on Israeli behavior is minor—but that’s admittedly conjecture.

3. Around 70% of the German populace are currently against delivering weapons to Israel (according to Körber Foundation). There’s a disconnect between people and government at times.

That’s a response to an argument I was not making. I share your non-enthusiasm about .ml.

I was talking about the social cost of locking out the creators of Lemmy. It’s reasonable to argue that that social cost is worth bearing. But it’s imo unreasonable to pretend it doesn’t exist.

However, I would caution that .ml is the standard instance that many people start out at, because that’s the site promoted from Lemmy’s GitHub and from join-lemmy:org. There are reasonable people caught among the unreasonable ones.

I’d object to [.ml] being the “only community that supports an attempted genocide” [emphasis mine], for two reasons:

• The Grad and Bear instances also exist and are more consistently pro-Russian. They are already defederated from e.g. feddit.org, precisely because there is no social cost associated with defederating them.
• I find it hard to accept this stance of absolute moral superiority. What the Russian government inflicts on Ukraine is atrocious but not entirely unparalleled.

It’s also been proven that Spotify artificially increases the field of your competition by contracting out lowish-quality original compositions in some cases, for which they get to keep all the royalties.

A lot of well-known musicians are actually not that well off. While Taytay has a private jet, there’s a very long tail. The increased access to recording, discovery, and playback tools was not accompanied by an equal increase in money spent on pop culture. It’s also not necessarily accompanied by increased fairness in the way money is being split up – despite digital downloads/streams being being much cheaper than CD logistics.

Of course they could but that’s not free. Forked projects are a lot of work. Maybe it would be easier to go for a different software, such as kbin. Or maybe the defederation goes over just fine and arrangements are found easily. I don’t know. My point is there’s a social component to defederating that’s likely a bit bigger than just shutting out Russia/China enjoyers.

Ideally. Though you can do a 80s Germany: Find a suboptimal storage site right next to the inner-German border, so as to piss off the other side of the Iron Curtain. Surprisingly, only a few years after you reunite (and it feels so good), except now you have a bunch of contaminated water in your storage site after mere decades.

But quite honestly — how can you predict the fate of even the “safest” storage site? Will there be a fracking boom near it in the next 200 years? Something other new technology? And in that sense, it really doesn’t matter whether half life is 10k years or 100k years.

You’re missing that no one ever invested in nuclear if they didn’t expect to socialize storage cost. The premise is completely absurd too — you can’t keep anything safe for over 100k years. There’s no way to ensure that people won’t dig up rocks, even on a 500-year horizon.

The entire history of humanity is only 300k years long, and our languages as well as our societal systems of organization are much younger.
