The decision leaves room for additional court challenges that could further slow Trump’s order, and other similar cases have already been filed. The U.S. Postal Service laid out how it would implement the order last week, but time is running short to impose major changes with some states beginning to send mail ballots to voters in just a few weeks.
The Supreme Court’s conservative majority didn’t decide the legality of Trump’s order, instead ruling that the states did not have the legal right to challenge it.
“The Court’s disposition of this application does not mean that any measure taken by the Government to implement the Order will necessarily be lawful. On that score, time will tell,” the majority wrote in an unsigned order.
Hopefully there’s not enough time for the courts to further allow this bullshit. Either way, use ballot drop boxes, and if you’re in a state like Washington, if you don’t get your mailed ballot on schedule, you are allowed and encouraged to print it at home or at a library and drop it off in a ballot box.
Legality hasn’t stopped Trump from making orders before. MAGA doesn’t care about laws.
I didn’t say they did. But so far, the courts have slowed them down a bit, to the point where they need to slam through changes as fast as possible. That is not to say that tomorrow they won’t start fully ignoring the courts, and that’s also why I included details about ballot dropboxes that the fed has no control over.
States need to start spinning up their own postal services either together or individually to avoid shit like this and to circumnavigate any other fuckery, IE Trump attacking mailed medicine because of trans folks or something equally vindictively stupid. Pretty hard for the feds to fuck with something entirely controlled by the states with no federal oversight, bonus points in that you could probably build it better and choke out the postal service if they continue to act horrid.
Destroying the postal service is a conservative goal. UPS, FedEx, and Amazon don’t want there to be a semi-public alternative that anyone can use.
While that may be true it shouldn’t stop us from constructing redundant systems where possible. Best case scenario it’s used for state thing only internal documents, mail out things, literal food stamps if needed better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Also worst case scenario you revoke the business licenses of those listed, because fuckem.
