Belgium eliminated imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) in August, driving an EU-wide reduction months ahead of a total ban, according to a new report published by the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) think tank on Sept. 11.
“EU imports of Russian LNG fell 46% month-on-month to their lowest monthly volume since Russia’s full-scale invasion began (in 2022),” reads CREA’s latest report.

Belgium’s weaning itself off Russian LNG leaves France, Spain, and the Netherlands as the remaining importers.
French ports accounted for 57% of the EU’s total LNG imports. Levi explained that France’s TotalEnergies energy company has an LNG import contract that will be terminated at the end of 2026.

In August 2026, Russia’s fossil fuel export revenues fell by 8% month-on-month to EUR 604 mn per day, while export volumes fell 7%, according to the report.

China was the largest buyer of Russian fossil fuels in August 2026, with seaborne crude imports up 16% month-on-month and 62% above August 2025 levels.

It do cost money to change though and unless you get a heat pump, it won’t necessarily save you money, regular electric water heaters take a ton of power. If you get an air to water or ground to water heatpump, those will save you a ton of money, but the installation costs are… more than you’ll save on water alone, would have to heat your entire home for it to pay off eventually
