Well yes, that’s the goal of all technological progress. Ya think we have assembly lines in factories for the fun of it? Or machines automating what used to be artisanal work? CNC machines making parts that used to be forged for example. Do you think the goal of the tractor is anything more than to get by with fewer workers on the fields?
Hell, go as far back as the invention of the printing press and the owners of these could stop relying on monks copying everything by hand.
You can avoid AI altogether or if you can find a genuinely good use case for it, you can potentially use it to start a company with fewer employees, meaning less starting capital needed.
At the end of the day your problem is with capitalism and the boomers who want to retire on even larger piles of cash, not the tool that could actually be used to reduce the need for capital if it was as good as the people selling it wasn’t you to think.
That’s only if Hyperscale AI doesn’t prove to be a bubble. If AI ends up as regular software, it’s a different story.
Basically, Hyperscale AI turned computing to a capital intensive industry, when it was a labour intensive industry before (which is why developers were so well paid). If that stabilizes as the new normal, then the meme is 100% true. If it turns out that after a certain point, throwing more hardware at the models doesn’t really improve them AND things like quantization that turn LLMs/agents into software anyone can run on basic hardware, then we are in a different timeline.
wealth:skill::capital:labour
It’s not a new concept, and neither are the countermeasures or remedies.
Anyone know who said this?
somebody found it here: https://piefed.social/post/2356840#comment_12821588
knowledge and data is not really skill, but i get what they were referring to
Wealth has always had access to skill. AI just gave them access that’s even cheaper, and less likely to complain and unionize.
that’s why the “removing access to wealth” part is important
We need to seriously deal with the wealthy, they seem intent on killing everyone else.
And as a side effect it’s destroying the next generation’s access to skill by undermining the education system.
The Matrix called the 90s the peak of human civilization, and it felt extreme and foolish at the time. Turned out to be prescient.
The education system started getting gutted in the 80s, and it accelerated rapidly under W in the 00s. MAGA is a direct line from this and the similar policies around it.
Not this “american going to shit = decline of civilisation” talk again…
Life continues getting better in China every year.
Just something to think about.
Not for the Uyghurs so much.
In any given country there are always groups that are, to varying degrees, persecuted, ostracised or who don’t benefit from the general increase in the quality of life. That does not mean the country isn’t doing well.
Many of the same people and organizations that told you that are also Israel supporters. Ask yourself why that is.
The actual statistics for Xinjiang province show the same quality of life improvements as the rest of China. The Uyghur population is living longer, attaining higher education, earning higher incomes, and their region is seeing constant development.
Time will tell. A year from now, I bet things are even better. Will your life be better next year? Mine probably won’t.
mate, i hear you opinion. But your comment and your past comments come in too strong.
As if you are paid to push an agenda.
Sometimes it does feel you are a bot account enabling a specific narrative.Good luck on future conversations on the internet. Hope you get more considerate
They aren’t coming on too strong just because you don’t like what they said. You might be a bit sensitive to the topic.
Somehow I’m the one that’s coming on too strong and is inconsiderate, but it’s okay for them to accuse me of being either being a paid liar or not being human at all.
I do this for free because I’m a stupid loser and I haven’t had friends for almost ten years and I probably never will again and have nothing better to do with my time and it will never get better and anyone who says otherwise is a fucking liar. 🙂
This is absolutely true
What is also true is that the Republican speaker of the House in Indiana explained their long term goal was to gut education because it wasn’t profitable.
This was in the 1980s
Mission Accomplished
I mean it’s a complete misunderstanding of the economic basis for profits but hey.
One of the reasons why there are no next generations for me.
I refuse to help populate the water wars of 2063
2063? My, aren’t we optimistic. 😒
Bro. It’s meant to take over natural humanity nevermind generations… We are gvinging away humanity for the force that already raped our humanity.
where is this quote? I’d rather share that than some influencer quoting the quote.
Rarely have I seen it described so succinctly!
This is apparently a quote disseminated by jeffowski on the Mastodons, but said by his friend Joseph Browning on FB: https://blog.trvth.org/2024/10/underlying-purpose.html
Skill, but also copyright.
All these people at work are so eager to devalue themselves. They’re rushing to have AI do their work and accepting the same pay.
Oofta, felt that in my stomach…The truth of its impactful. I love when people can succinctly summarize the purpose of things.
Oofta
found the Minnesotan
LOL Incorrect, I just picked up that bit of lingo from a few Minnesotan YouTubers, as I am too autistic for my own good. “Oofta” it just sounds quite nice to say and hear. 😛
I picked it up from Fargo
Oh ya?
in other words: “Make the rich richer while fucking everyone else into the dirt with all available violence.”
The goal of the owners is to rid themselves of paying for things they feel entitled to. AI is another step towards total control for the real owners of this country (USA).
This is one of those times I like to be a pedant and separate LLMs and other generating bots from what I think most people would consider intelligence. Real intelligence made from silicon could serve all of humanity, but LLMs are just the next fancy shitcoin the wealthy and their hangers-on want to convince you spits out something that has high value when it clearly doesn’t (unless you’re in the propaganda business).
Edited for clarity
define “real AI” and not as in “it’s not an LLM”
edit: also 20 upvotes on this in fuck_ai? c’mon people use your heads…
I didn’t say “real AI” why are you asking for a definition? EDIT I’m dumb, edited my comment
Real AI tech could serve all of humanity
hallucinated by AI?
LOL ok you got me I specifically tried to avoid saying that. I meant real intelligence. I’ll edit my comment.
EDIT: And by “real intelligence” I’m speaking of beings which display traits like curiosity and creativity.
This guy/gal/enby MLs
How could “real AI” serve humanity?

Dude, you are talking about 8 months ago. The versions you pay for are really good.
Seriously
They’re good at things you’re not good at. If you’re good at something, and you see them try to do it, they’re shite.
LLMs are already better than humans at math and cybersecurity, since around spring this year. If you are a human in those fields, you’re worse, period. I’m not sure why you’d just to around blatantly lying about things you clearly don’t understand.
yeah, they’re not even that good
Right? But also even perfectly made slop is still slop. Slop is nothing new it’s just getting automated
I keep hearing this but what makes them “good”? Like at the end of the day they’re still just LLMs right? Even if they can generate a perfect picture that no human could tell is AI, so what? What is that skill useful for besides fooling humans into believing something is real that isn’t true?
Heck- they can’t even set a reminder like natural language processing (Siri) could do fifteen years ago.
For instance:
I asked Claude to help me create a website. IMHO the one it built (with some back and forth) was way better than websites I have paid professionals to build.
Furthermore, it showed me how to get it hosted for free.
It created programs that keep it updated that do not involve using Claude.
I currently have a step where I am involved in the updates, but once I have confidence that it can properly handle edge cases I will have it completely automate the process.
Siri cannot do that.
MIT says AI can credibly do undergraduate work
People keep piling into the copium but they should be paying attention.
I think you’re misunderstanding my question, I’m not saying LLMs can’t spit out a website so perfectly convincing that it would be impossible to discern from a human made website.
I’m asking what makes speeding up the creation of such “slop-sites” useful or desirable to anyone?
EDIT: Maybe you could sell me on why automating undergraduate work is something interesting or helpful?
Where I work it has become standard to use these tools. Being dismissive of it’s capabilities is a ship that sailed 2 years ago, and unfortunately it will only get more powerful.
I hate it though and wish we could put all this back into Pandora’s box.
I know you think they’re good, I asked what makes them good. Maybe you can you give an example of what makes them good? It might help me understand your perspective.
Theres a really interesting episode of the podcast “diary of s ceo” with the guest Ed Zitron. He says a lot about how we can see some really good uses for AI but not trillions of dollars worth of use. Billions, maybe, but trillions? Personally, im wondering if this is a way for the uber rich to suck as much money out of the rich before the economy collapses.
The investment speculation angle really does feel like crypto 2.0. Blockchain tech has some interesting, though niche right now, uses.
I’m with Ed I absolutely don’t think LLMs are worthless but anyone who thinks a critical mass of real people want to pay real dollars for slop are living a fantasy.
