  • This is total alarmist misinformation. The “evidence of terrorism” was not “using Signal” or “carrying a first aid kit”, it was taking part in an armed assault on an immigration facility where a dozen people set off fireworks and shot a police officer with an AR-15.

The prosecution used the presence of the first aid kit they carried during their armed assault, along with actual messages (not metadata) from a Signal chat to make the case that the attackers planned on using violence.

There are a lot of problems with this case, IMO the most dangerous part here is that adds legitimacy the (false) idea that “antifa” is an organization that exists. Something the Trump administration has been struggling to prove. This X post takes small details out of context.

    1. Don’t trust anything ever posted to X. Especially something that discourages the use of private messaging apps.

    2. I highly recommend everyone report this this post to your admins and strongly recommend all instance admins ban/warn accounts like OP. If we want the fediverse to catch on it needs to be more factual, not knee jer.

  • It’s primary use is to help scared people live within their delusions and avoid facing reality. Be it advertising or propaganda.

I’ve heard Fascism described primarily as an aesthetic that everything else within it, including reality, flows from. GenAI makes it a lot easier to apply the aesthetic to whatever uncomfortable reality a scared lonely person may desire.

  • Libelec (kodi) is fine if only playing local media but its use for anything else except realdebrid is extremely lacking. On the plus side it will run great on an Rpi5 and if you go that route you can probably even use your TV remote because Libelec has excellent CEC support.

Jellyfin/Plex is something your TV also probably has an app for, so you wouldn’t even need a media center, just a media server.

Plasma Bigscreen is making slow gains, but in a couple of years will probably be the definitive Linux media center PC.

Also a bit unconventional, but Bazzite can load directly into Steam’s big picture mode. From there you could set shortcuts for Jellyfin or Plex HTPC.

  • I think it could be cool for background NPC dialogue in big open RPGs like Skyrim. Imagine if townsfolk could have realistic conversations and interactions like bartering over goods, etc. Nothing major or plot-dependent, obviously. Just something more natural than a handful of repeated, scripted and prerecorded phrases.

I would compare it to ray-tracing. Ray tracing means the artists don’t have to plan out every single light beam, and the result is actually more realistic than if they had. A tactfully used LLM could mean they don’t have to script out every line of background dialogue and also achieve a more realistic result.

  • Damn 99% of the time someone says not to use an open source product it’s because of some obscure drama unrelated to the actual program.

But in this case the dev appears to not just be using AI code (not great but debatable) but using mostly AI code and using AI to reply to bug reports. Not something the average person wants to be running in a live environment.

I haven’t used Booklore but the excitement around it was nudging me there. I think I’ll stick with CWAs slower rollout.
