It’s never not a viable option. Voting takes a whole five minutes. There’s literally no excuse to not participate and minimize damage. Whether you decide to do more after that is what this should influence, not whether you vote. If you choose to not vote then you’re just a useful idiot.
Abstaining is propaganda pushed by Republicans. As far as you state abstaining/protest voting does nothing, I believe it does depending on how it’s done. We’ve certainly seen how it has changed politics with Ross Perot and how it lead to MAGA. We’ve seen how it affected things recently with Dearborn abandon voters and how their stance has accelerated saying fuck AIPAC.

Yeah there were consequences of not voting but that little movement of conscientious objectors did end up fueling progressives and the rest of the voting populace to think about why they abstained and has had an effect on politics and for how little it was seems to have had a outsized impact on things moving forward. No one is saying there weren’t consequences to that decision, their whining about the consequences after were annoying as hell, but their impact was and is being felt in today’s politics.
