It’s insane to me that there have been so many cases of black people found hanging recently and they’ve pretty much all been brushed off.
There’s something wrong with the world when a children’s entertainer needs to ask the country to bother caring about it.

The problem is that we don’t have any information
Conspiracy people are going to say it’s a cover up but also it very well could be suicide or non-racially motivated murders
In that article the family straight up agrees one case was suicide, and in another case the family admitted that the victims was constantly being bullied, so good chance for suicide there too
The latest case in that article was so new we didn’t even know the victims name
That’s 3 out of 7 all year.
One case the woman left town for a family reunion and while no arrest was made her on-again-off-again black boyfriend was questioned and witnesses say that two had gotten into a fight the day before she was found. He was a felon who was currently set to appear in court for felony possession of a firearm.
So maybe 4 black people were hung due to racism. More likely, if any, it was 3. But also, maybe not. Not only do we not know any of these were murders, but we also don’t know it was a white person that did it even if it was murder
and you’re talking about a problem that is, at most, 7 people across the entire united states over 8 months
Or, the victim was constantly harassed until being found hanging from a tree, so there’s already a motive and likely a handful of suspects
Any estimates on how many did it outdoors, where they’re likely to be interrupted? See, this is the suspicious part. Basically no-one ever attempts hanging in public. Here, you have seven people over a year and the police just shrugs.
So this is tough to track but the US NVDRS data says that between 2005-2014 there were 25,270 hangings. 90.7% of those involved hanging, so 22,931.
The three most common hanging points were Trees (2215), beams, and closets.
That alone says 221 people hang themselves outdoors every year

Guess what investigating does. It gives you more information. Imagine that.
It’s not that the police don’t have any information, it’s that we, the people on Lemmy, don’t have any information.
The police said “suicide” and that’s where the story stops. You’re just assuming there is more to it but you don’t have any proof that there actually is
The article says one case even the family agrees is suicide. Another case the family agrees the victim was being bullied and so suicide is a strong possibility. One case the police have a suspect and it’s her boyfriend but there isn’t enough evidence to charge him. One case was so new we didn’t even have a name yet
According to the CDC about 12,000 people a year hanged themselves. You don’t think any of those people are ever black?
You’re just assuming these are all racially motivated cases of murder that the police are covering up… but you have zero evidence of that
And even if it were true it’s 4 cases over 8 months across the entirety of the United States. Not exactly the kind of thing that warrants national attention
I don’t think it’s likely that black people often hang themselves from a tree in a way that looks suspiciously like a lynching.
Dude, national attention is given to the most trivial of issues. Why is it undeserving in this case?
I found more data
Between 2005 and 2014 there were 25,207 suicides by asphyxiation. 90% of these were hanging and the most common place was a tree, at 2,215
76% of the victims were white, so 1683 people were non-white… over 9 years. SO that’s 59 a year or about 5 a month.
So yeah, finding 8 black people hanging in public over 8 months is probably pretty normal
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29308538/
Yeah I’m sure that you’d love that to be the case.
I can’t imagine commenting in a public forum telling people to not care and not investigate. Why would you spend your life this way?
Why would you look up statistics in an effort to tell people to do nothing?
We don’t have any information because the cops ruled it a suicide and didn’t look for any information.
Or there just isn’t any information because it actually was suicide
Again, one of them the family agrees probably was suicide. One of them the family admits that the victim was being bullied and so suicide is a strong possibility. One of them is probably murder there just isn’t enough evidence to prove it. The fourth case was so new we didn’t even have a name
The other four we have no information on. It’s not that the police don’t have any information, we, the people of lemmy, don’t have any information on them. All we know is that the police ruled it suicide. We have zero evidence that the police didn’t investigate or that there were signs of a struggle and the police covered it up… all we know is the police said, “suicide”
Which isn’t all that shocking because according to the CDC about 12,000 people a year commit suicide by hanging themselves. You don’t think any of those people are ever black?
And even if there were signs of a struggle that the police ignored we still have zero evidence that the murderer is white. Black people can’t hang each other? Hispanic people can’t hang black people?
It’s ironically racist to just assume that it had to be something only a white person could have done. Like saying every time you hear a story of someone getting shot you just assume the trigger man is black. Doesn’t matter what color you skin is, people are people. Anybody could have done this, including the victim themselves
So the only way this matters is if it turns out all four of the remaining cases turned out to be racially motivated murders committed by a white person but even then, it’s four people across 8 months over the entirely of the United States… not exactly the kind of thing that needs nation wide attention
