It’s insane to me that there have been so many cases of black people found hanging recently and they’ve pretty much all been brushed off.

There’s something wrong with the world when a children’s entertainer needs to ask the country to bother caring about it.

It’s not that the police don’t have any information, it’s that we, the people on Lemmy, don’t have any information.

The police said “suicide” and that’s where the story stops. You’re just assuming there is more to it but you don’t have any proof that there actually is

The article says one case even the family agrees is suicide. Another case the family agrees the victim was being bullied and so suicide is a strong possibility. One case the police have a suspect and it’s her boyfriend but there isn’t enough evidence to charge him. One case was so new we didn’t even have a name yet

According to the CDC about 12,000 people a year hanged themselves. You don’t think any of those people are ever black?

You’re just assuming these are all racially motivated cases of murder that the police are covering up… but you have zero evidence of that

And even if it were true it’s 4 cases over 8 months across the entirety of the United States. Not exactly the kind of thing that warrants national attention

I don’t think it’s likely that black people often hang themselves from a tree in a way that looks suspiciously like a lynching.

And even if it were true it’s 4 cases over 8 months across the entirety of the United States. Not exactly the kind of thing that warrants national attention

Dude, national attention is given to the most trivial of issues. Why is it undeserving in this case?

        I found more data

Between 2005 and 2014 there were 25,207 suicides by asphyxiation. 90% of these were hanging and the most common place was a tree, at 2,215

76% of the victims were white, so 1683 people were non-white… over 9 years. SO that’s 59 a year or about 5 a month.

So yeah, finding 8 black people hanging in public over 8 months is probably pretty normal

Yeah I’m sure that you’d love that to be the case.

I can’t imagine commenting in a public forum telling people to not care and not investigate. Why would you spend your life this way?

Why would you look up statistics in an effort to tell people to do nothing?

They did investigate, they said it was suicide. You’ve just decided on your own that this is untrue

I asked what proof you had and you said none, just a gut feeling that it was suspicious because they were black and not only hanged, but hanged outside. Turns out people track this kind of information so we could look it it up to see if you were right. You were wrong. Not only is hanging still an extremely common form of suicide (even for black people), but doing it outside is the preferred method.

This is how you are suppose to live your life. Walking around assuming everything is a racist conspiracy based on a hunch and that you can trust everything every famous person says is how you end up stupid

Got any proof that they actually did investigate?

I asked what proof you had and you said none,

No such exchange happened with me, but maybe you are having other shruggy exchanges with others.

This is how you are suppose to live your life.

Sure, bud. You’re supposed to live your life looking up statistics to argue on the Internet that nothing ever happens.
