This happened two days ago, but it isn’t being talked about enough. American car makers might only be selling in domestic markets soon.
Specifically, the agency eliminated the 2009 Greenhouse Gas Endangerment Finding published during the Obama Administration, thus removing federal greenhouse gas emission standards for all model-year 2012 to 2027 and beyond vehicles, the agency announced via a press release.
“The U.S. ceasing regulation of greenhouse gases is, in fact, unlikely to have a major impact on automaker R&D spending as no other major car market is lowering or eliminating standards, so automakers will still need to invest in technologies to meet those requirements in order to sell outside the U.S.”
It’s not clear how automakers will respond to this deregulation, as they all operate globally and the U.S. accounts for just one, albeit big, market.

Its going to come down to money.
Is the tech to keep it cleaner cheaper than not?
If it saves them $50 a car to use something less clean they’ll use it if they can sell it nationwide vs using the more expensive part for global exports.
If they can’t do it at a national level due to specific state rules, then they’d probably just use the more expensive option everywhere to keep production and supply chains for the country the same.
Maybe it’s a good thing? Car makers in US push bigger cars so they can be classified as trucks and avoid emission limits. Maybe without the limits smaller cars will become more popular again?
This, this right here is yet another data point when I say the US is going to look like China in 10 years, and not in the good way.
You will see inferior and knock off products that will only be sold in the US because the US companies will cut corners and gaps because they can. The rest of the world will continue to work together and Americans will just get the crappy and dangerous versions, all in the name of money.
On the other hand
- Volvo ex60 is coming out and looks outstanding
- Toyota is releasing four new EVs in market segments where they are much needed
- Rivian r2 is coming out, with r3x generating excitement
- Slate truck coming soon, to lots of excitement
- new vehicles are increasingly unaffordable
- Hyundai/Kia is really upping their game, with frequent releases of exciting technology
- while truck market is highly profitable, it’s generally older technology at excessive prices plus driven by fashion, which could collapse very quickly

Those manufacturers could easily be not selling to anyone soon.
All those 4 EV as SUV. SUV are full of problems for society and I would rather avoid them.

A bit of encouragement walking my dog today …… up the street is a family of contractors, including five kids that are now young adults. Most of the time I’ve lived here, they’ve had 4-5 F-150s parked out front. This morning not one. Four cars and I even saw one of them drive up in a Honda Civic!!!
- I hope the personal pickup truck market collapses as soon as possible.
- Slate trucks are very commercial which is great since it limits “luxury” truck buyers, but it would be straight into papa Bezos’s pocket.
- Hyundai’s ioniq series & the Rivian R3 have been looking amazing, but as you said both are still no where near affordable enough
- Toyota is also hanging on as hard as possible to combustion engines, holding on to offering hybrids and fuel cell vehicles over BEVs.
- People are still sticking to the viewpoint that smaller cars are not enough, so manufacturers continue to offer more suvs & crossovers rather than sedans & hatchbacks
Overall I agree, and I hope things get cheaper when manufacturing keeps becoming more global rather than the manufacturing hubs we currently have.
I saw Rivian’s new vehicles at the L.A. Auto show, along with several other manufacturer’s hybrid and EV cars. The Rivians were nice cars. The next two years will hopefully see a lot more options, and most importantly, affordable options if the sticker prices I saw are to be beleived.
