Trump has been acting exactly like European royalties and their courts, maximising their own wealth at the cost of an entire nation and engaging in wars over inheritance of territory and the like.

Historicaly, there has always been a system of checks that balanced the power between monarch, aristocracy, church and people and through most of history the monarchs were less powerfull than any modern autocrat - some exceptions notwithstanding. Most aristocrats including monarchs were aware that they are but a part of a dynasty, and that they themselves are able to thrive only if their fiefdom thrives. So no - this is not a war between democracy and royalty, it’s a war between democracy and autocracy, and the royalties are on the side of democracy.
Until the revolutions of 1848, absolutism was the form of government for hundreds of years. A perfect example would be the Austrian Empire. The reason why modern Austria has such an absurdly rich collection of cultural artifacts is because the emperor used tax money to fund his hobbies. Only after the revolution in Austria of 1848, there was a separation of power, where the emperor was removed as the operative head of state. Before that, yes, there were ministers, but all of them were under the direct command of the Emperor. The Spanish inheritance war is a very good example, which essentially was a pissing contest of different houses, because they all wanted that big beautiful blotch on the map.
