I agree with my prime minister, Mette Frederiksen here:
There was no official EU reaction to the talks. The dialogue had not been coordinated with other European leaders, the Danish and Swedish prime ministers said. “I think Europe should stick together rather than going solo,” commented Sweden’s Ulf Kristersson.
This was a mistake.
As a finn, I disagree (who would have thunk?). There’s probably quite some broken telephone going on at the moment. European leaders were told that this was happening, and there was discussions with Ukraine beforehand.
This war WILL end by discussions and the signing of a fancy piece of paper. Holding a off the record discussions about current terms is a lot more productive than trying to infer the others wishes via public facing speeches or state media.
Let’s also think about who is talking currently. We don’t know what Ukraine is saying and to who. The orange orangutan is making deals with Russia. He also wants to bring in China, who also don’t stand to gain much from a Ukrainian success.
No one has surrendered anything, we do need to take space in negotiations however. If we don’t negotiate, everyone else will.
China, who also don’t stand to gain much from a Ukrainian success.
However, China absolutely benefits from weak Russia. Also China happily sells everyone drone parts, solar and other power tech to rebuilding Ukraine and a million other things to both global west and to Russia and their allies. So, no matter what happens, they are on a pretty good position both financially and politically, at least as long as they don’t take too heavy stance on either side.

I do agree that opening channels which bypass USA is good. I’m just thinking more of the fact that only Norway and Finland speaking with Russia isn’t a good look for European unity.
No one has surrendered anything
Previous mantra was unified diplomatic isolation. So that strategy was esentially surrendered.
Now we have two countries going solo realpolitik.
I’m not saying its necessary a bad development but its certainly a break from previous line.
Swede here,I agree fully, this just shows how fractured the EU actually is, and have given Putin and Trump a new angle to play while trying to distabelize the EU.
This was a reckless and rash action on top of it being a mistake.
Showing unity now is far, far, far more important now than before the war started.
The EU is still on shaky ground, and our competition is closely observing our actions, Russia, USA, China and others are currently planning to undermine the EU and these dumb actions only gives them more leverage.
Realpolitik back on the menu?
That was abrupt. I wonder if Trump ordered it.
