L’installation de dos d’âne dans deux rues résidentielles de Beauport soulève l’ire de citoyens qui s’en prennent dans des «messages haineux» aux parents endeuillés qui ont perdu leur enfant lors d’une collision dans le quartier cet été.
The article mentions that things got worse, that in the past people would not have rallied even against a mere memorial for a child that died in a traffic accident and that anti-cyclists campaign have fueled real hatred making something like that political.
Really, this is revealing a truly ugly side of some people. What a monster do you have to be to react like that?
I know things got controversial because, oh good, physical measures to reduce speeding were suggested there as a reaction to the death of the child that was, as I understand a victim to that speeding. Just imagine if you have to spend 2 seconds longer on your car journey because of that.
The car loses some lifetime due to increased stress on the suspension, axles, etc.
The children get to live.
I honestly think this is a symptom of struggling financially so hard that youd rather maybe save $1000 4 months down the line than… Protect children’s lives.
My school dropoff round-trip is 28 speed humps in 15 minutes.
In the past year I have replaced three wheel bearings, a driveshaft, two engine mounts and a set of bonnet bump stops. It takes days. I’m not even close to done yet. The cars are garaged and everything.
I know this group has a hatred of cars. I have a hatred of roads.
Speed humps suck too. It just pushes people into bigger cars that mow down more kids.
Speed bumps are a bad way to handle such issues. Just narrow the lanes and put dividers between lanes and then smaller vehicles are rewarded instead of larger. Granted, just throwing a speed bump every 1/4 mile is quicker and has the lower upfront cost. L
That’s pretty much what I write to the local council every time it happens. Speed humps disproportionately punishes smaller vehicles, and it should go the other way.
28 speed humps in 15 minutes is less than one every thirty seconds which doesn’t seem like nearly enough for a residental area.
No car in the world gets damaged by speed bumps as you describe unless you drive over them irresponsibly, in which case you might as well level the same criticism at kerbs, parking barriers and traffic cones. Honestly sounds like you’re a shit driver. If you need to slow to a crawl to get over them, fucking deal with it.
The people on bikes and on foot are dealing with rain or snow or baking heat, kerbs and arbitrary crossing restrictions, noise and pollution. If they fuck up they might get a bruise. You, meanwhile, are sitting in an armchair, in a climate-controlled room, surrounded by padding and safety equipment, and all you need to do is gently push either the “go faster” or “go slower” pedal to solve all the problems you’re moaning about, and if you fuck up you are almost guaranteed to walk away but might kill or maime several others in the process.
You need to take responsibility for yourself, or you need to fuck off.
That’s a pretty hot-headed and irrational take. Are you as bad as reading the road as you are at reading the message? Are you this quick to anger when you’re behind the wheel?
Just for when pHr34kY@lemmy.world either decides to take a couple of deep breaths, calm down and delete their comment in shame (or the mods step in), here is what they put:
Get fucked dickhead
Which they then changed to:
Of all the dumb cunts I have encountered, you are the dumbest of cunts
If you’re driving a truck over a speed bump at a speed that would launch a hatchback into the air, you are driving way too fucking fast over that speedbump.
28 speed bumps either means you are driving pretty far through residential streets instead if taking (more congested?) main corridors or the traffic design in your area is pretty bad. Are the using speed bumps to compensate for too wide and too straight streets?
Also, either your car is trash or you are approaching those speed bumps way too fast. I don’t know anyone with such pronlems and we do have speed bumps too, you know.
No one needs a bigger car because of speed bumps but I understand that people are looking for excuses to justify choices that put others at risk for no good reason.
It’s not a residential rat-run. It’s the most direct route.
The speed humps are all along windy, hilly streets. The only straight stretch (about 500m) has chicanes all through it.
The car is a 900kg hatchback with sports suspension. I slow down way more than everyone else does. The wheels leave the ground if you hit them at anything over 30km/h.

Ngl I live in an area with a lot of speedbumps and I’ve never had a suspension failure or know anyone who has.
Even though the claim does make sense in theory, I think it’s way overblown and really not significant in the real world.
Why do you think we hate cars so much? This is what driving a car does to you: turns you into a monster.
Also: I’d bet you’d face more legal consequences for throwing a rock at a speeding car than you would for running someone over.
Someone says I shouldn’t blast down to my esthetician at 55 anymore? Better get the effigy
Two seconds longer?

Edit: oh, they changed it again! What fun!
bigger cars react worse to speed bumps, not better.
more mass is more inertia to dampen.
more height is more leverage you feel sitting up higher.
A lifted Ford Ranger Raptor doesn’t even need to brake for them.
A lowered hot hatch at the same speed goes airborne.
It’s all about the amount of travel on the shock absorbers. Small and sporty cars have almost none.
The “more mass = more intertia to dampen” rule doesn’t come into play until it’s your face absorbing the radiator grill.

It happens at half the speed limit.
i highly doubt that
you clearly haven’t seen the speed limits some cities keep after installing speed bumps
