I’ll note that rural utilities have been quite subsidized since the New Deal; the idea was that making electricity and phone service universal would benefit the country as a whole and bring everybody on board with the idea of government doing things for people.

    Well, a certain type of folk refuse to rely on the gubmint for anything, but they’ll get mad as hell when the gubmint tries to take away something it was already giving them. That didn’t count, you see.

      I saw a politician describing progressive efforts as using popularity to push through programs for the general good and then when there’s the inevitable backlash, you hope that the next Congress doesn’t fully undo the good and that people realize that it’s valuable and want to keep it.

      Change is tough, and most people will choose bad status quo over disruptive maybe-improvement. See:conservatives
