One instance from 10 years ago, that is pretty funny though
At the RNC, Trump vowed to protect the LGBTQ community against “foreign” threats, and billionaire Peter Thiel gave a speech in which he said he was “proud to be gay.” This has led some to call the 2016 Republican National Convention the most “gay friendly” RNC ever; Grindr’s findings show that may have been true in more than one way.
It also appears to be an outlier as far as Republican conventions go. Remember this is also back when there was the whole “Gays for Trump” thing, so certainly some of those numbers come from publicly gay useful idiots rather than repressed homophobes. Since such conservative LGBTQ groups have fallen in popularity, and the GOP has been much less friendly towards them, I think it’s fair to say “RNC Grindr spikes” are more anomalous than periodic.
Gays for Trump might not have been individually popular, but there was a lot more “just because we’re gay doesn’t mean we’re liberal!” type shit going around at the time. Remember, Trump ran as the first president to support gay marriage, conservative LGBTQ was trying to be a thing. Yeah it might not be responsible for all of them, but it surely contributed. I’m not dismissing evidence, I’m looking at the context of times that would explain why the gayest RNC ever would cause a Grindr spike.
