The sad part is that republicans have simply decided to double-down on it. I have literally heard my father utter the words “well then I guess I support pedophiles, because I’m still voting red.” I hate that the current state of affairs has led to people losing family members due to something as black and white as “do pedophiles deserve to exist in polite society?”

Tagging them as maga is an interesting choice, given their home instance and the fact that they were defending a trans person. But sure, pop off I guess.

The interesting part about this was that it would still allow the lawmakers to use the old (easier) method, while regular citizens would be forced to use the new (harder) method. So the lawmakers know this new system would be harder, and specifically created a carve-out for themselves.

But where are you going to see it that you’d count it?

At the ballot box. That’s really the only “survey” that matters. Everything else is just statisticians trying to justify their Masters degrees. I’m hopeful for midterms, but I’ve been so consistently disappointed by my peers that I’m refusing to get my hopes up until after the results are in.

Also worth noting that this was civil court, not criminal. In criminal court, pleading the fifth simply means you’re refusing to testify against yourself. In criminal cases, you still have the presumption of innocence, so pleading the fifth isn’t an admission of guilt.

But the reason the civil/criminal distinction is notable is because civil court uses the fifth amendment against you. If you plead the fifth in civil court, jurors are instructed to presume that the testimony would be damning. The presumption of innocence doesn’t exist in civil court, so pleading the fifth isn’t going to help your case.

The only reason you would plead the fifth in civil court is to avoid having your civil testimony used against you in criminal court. For instance, if you committed a rape and end up in civil court, pleading the fifth can be a way to avoid being criminally charged with rape. Because if you admit it under oath in civil court, the criminal court can use it against you. But it will almost certainly hurt your civil case, because pleading the fifth to avoid criminal charges will have the civil courts presuming guilt.

Basically, if he plead the fifth 80 times, that was 80 times that the civil courts told jurors “presume his testimony would implicate him in {whatever he is accused of}.”

Yeah, if you’re trying to honeypot someone with an OS-level rootkit, Lemmy would be a pretty silly place to do so. After all, there’s like a 99% chance that whoever gets it will be installing their preferred version of Linux. Hell, I’d even go as far as flashing the BIOS, because that’s an easy step that only takes an extra 10-20 minutes.

I think the point is that if you load an empty profile (no photos, no videos, no apps, etc) but your phone storage is nearly full, it could throw up a red flag.
