The unfortunate side effect is people dying, unnecessarily. Of course, the institutions they undermine are part of the reason for stability and growth, so they are undermining American economic superiority. This will screw the wealthy more than the poor in the long run.

It will really screw them if it gets so bad that we all fight back. It’s pretty much a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face, but doing so to seek short term profit.
