Unemployed people were told that they had to work for large corporations just to keep getting their unemployment benefits. It came to about £1.50/hour or so when minimum wage was significantly higher than that.
Corporations got free labour out of it, tax payers paid the unemployment benefits for the benefit slaves. They often said you may get a full time job at the end of it. You won’t, they will find someone else who is unpaid.
Oh yeah, and some of those unemployed people used to work there but lost their jobs to unemployed people and then had to join them.

In a lot of the asian world, internship aren’t paid, some you have to pay for it. I guess Jenny is from one of these country.
