We’ve got a lot of tech that has the potential to be misused or used to go after ordinary citizens lying around. This, traffic cameras, ad id tracking, and a few others but so far it hasn’t really been used at scale. There are tens of victims so far rather than hundreds, thousands, or more.

Though the article did mention that the pigs were using a technique called parallel construction, which is when they have evidence of a crime that has not been obtained legally and they use that to look for other, legal means to collect evidence to prove the crime in court. So maybe this happens all the time and we just don’t know it yet.

I don’t know why two people would’ve downvoted this it’s absolutely true. Yes, parallel construction is used by all departments now as they see fit.

They have a lot more information than people think they do, and aren’t as dumb as people think they are. They also get information fed to them by these shady fusion centers where the feds bring in state and local dickheads in these information sharing spy center things and feed information to police.

Then you have the snowden revelations, the nsa was filtering down notes on peoples’ files on the LEIN, law enforcement information network, that is what police are running on those laptops in their vehicles. Like, fuck with his person notes and I don’t know what else.

Then the fancy electronics they have to intercept communications, they use spyware contractors, even the fucking nso group might be getting in on it, with their pegasus type zero click exploits that entirely corrupt phones and computers, recording audio, visual, even when off, seeing everything people do. That is where we are heading. Biden froze them out but you can bet that israeli company got the green light from prez now.

      Just to name a few.

They’re down voting because I said the problem hasn’t been happening at scale yet. It’s an opinion I’ve shared before that has been met with similar reaction. We’re very much still in the technology can be misused broadly, we haven’t gotten to the technology is being abused at scale yet.

It doesn’t fit the Lemmy hivemind worldview though which requires it to be a tangible current problem rather than yet another credible future problem.
