Americans are more skeptical of government information than they were a few years ago, with majorities now saying they have little or no trust in federal government information about elections and politics, foreign affairs or the environment, a new poll finds.
The survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and USA Facts shows that while mistrust of government information has grown since 2024, it’s also higher than it was at the end of President Donald Trump’s first term, underscoring how his recent attempts to dismantle parts of the federal bureaucracy may have affected public confidence in the executive branch, particularly among Democrats.

Modern oligarchy works, in part, by fostering apathy and exhaustion in the public. Undermining faith in public institutions is part of that. It’s why the president has been insulting his own government’s capacities this whole time. Even if his ranting and railing about election cheats isn’t based in reality, even if it doesn’t produce the kind of court outcomes he pushes for, it establishes a mood. It’s not just the rantings of a lunatic, it’s a plan, it’s a strategy.

Childhood poverty (arc) for one, but basically any one of like ten million opinion polls from that time could have told you the economy was not working for most people

Well considering that their federal government is currently being ran by an inveterate liar and his personality cult, that seems reasonable.
