A lot of counties and states charge now too. Some up front, (edit, maybe I am remembering wrong. but they have charged thousands of dollars for relatively easy rescues.) They got a lot of shit for it in my state in a county I lived in that is famous for religious extremist dickheads. I think they backed off the prepaid part after someone was caught in a river and waved his credit card for the news cameras before the authorities got to him.
This is actually an area that America is generally pretty good at i.e. rescues by the US Park Service are generally free, unless there’s obvious gross intelligence.
Personally, I would consider using AI to plan a trip for multiple people as gross negligence, but considering this current government’s position on AI, I suspect they weren’t charged a penny for it.
In my European country, mountain rescue is billed thousands of euro and it’s not free, if it was due to stupidity
I can’t imagine a 20 hour search+rescue being free in the land of the Free
