techbros have nothing to do with nerds and geeks >:(
Ah, I was expecting the no true Scotsman fallacy.
You can also always count on someone to call out logical fallacies on something that is not a logical argument.
That aside, calling out “this is fallacy X” does not make you smart or a good debater. They are not Pokémon moves to be called out to feel superior. Use them while constructing your point or shut up.
I will reiterate: I am aware that Peter Thiel really likes LotR, but he still has nothing to do with people that identify as nerds and geeks. This is an opinion, not a logical proposition.
Exactly! Don’t lump us with those fucking ghouls!
Us actual geeks are a lot nicer and try not to bother anyone.
Yeah, also:
People building, running, and maintaining fedi are geeks.
People in control of (not the ones building and maintaining) most/all corpo social are techbros.
I’ll have to save this one for all the articles about AI companies giving away their product for free.
“If the service is free, you are the product.”
It’s depressing how many times we have to keep explaining the absolute basics of the internet to people.
Well, in the case of AI, they’re giving it away because they are desperate to create a market. Their hope is that you will fire your entire staff and become entirely dependent on AI for your workflow and give them a lot of money.
But the reality is nobody wants AI that is right 80% of the time, or, more problematically: wrong 20% of the time.
Even if it was right 99% of the time, it still wouldn’t be worth replacing human labor, because labor is used as a meatshield for upper management. They’ve put a lot of effort into being untouchable, and they won’t want to take the hit personally when something goes wrong. You can’t fire the ‘employee’ when it fucks up, when it’s the only one you have.
There’s meat shield and there’s also excuse-for-employment. Management hates it when people work from home because it makes it obvious how little management actually contributes. Imagine if there were no workers for them to monitor the performance of.
Or South Korea “giving” it to every citizen.
Didn’t even get a grift receipt ;-;
Geeks aren’t the ones pushing GenAI, but for pun purposes we should let it slide this time.
Not the horse, though. The horse stays outside for bonfire night.
“Geeks” in this case aren’t the compulsively curious hackers but rather big money that realised that tech can be about deregulation, enshittification and looting in general. They’re as much geek as George W. Bush is a cowboy.
I think they’re geeks. They’re just money geeks not tech geeks. Some people obsessively study the flaws and loopholes in technology and become hackers. Some study the flaws and loopholes of the economy and become traders and financiers. The people amassing billions don’t even care about the money. It’s just a high score for them. Finding a way to twist the market into delivering high returns through financial wizardry has a lot of parallels to hacking. I would say most of Wall Street is full of geeks. It’s just money geeks not tech geeks.
In that sense a gym bro is a body geek! Which ngl checks out.
The phrase “beware Greeks bearing gifts” should actually be “beware of gifts bearing Greeks.”
And you really oughtta look that gift horse in the mouth to be sure it doesn’t have any Greeks inside.
But the horse was being pulled by Greek soldiers!
So the saying should be, “beware of Greeks bearing gifts bearing Greeks.” 😂
