Dutch people cycle an average of 2.6 kilometres each per day. If this pattern was replicated worldwide, the study suggests, annual global carbon emissions would drop by 686 million tonnes.

This mammoth figure exceeds the entire carbon footprint of most countries, including the UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Australia.

Yeah in order for this to work we’d all have to move to someplace with a climate where biking is nice.

I don’t live there. It’s hot here. When I go outside I can feel drops of sweat rolling down the small of my back down my spine and directly into my buttcrack. 15 minutes on a bicycle and I would need a shower. It’s not a viable form of transportation here. It’s just not.

Also, the Netherlanders won’t let me move there unless I have a lot of money already.

I mean no, you can bike even when the weather is shit. It gets hot in the Netherlands. It rains a fuck ton in the netherlands and there’s a running joke that in Amsterdam It doesnt matter which direction you’re biking the wind is in your face.

People live in places where walking or standing make you sweat. Deal with it.

I would say the biggest difference is that the Netherlands is basically fully flat. Biking up hills in Seattle or Boston would be a bitch. But funnily enough weve solved that too by having mini lifts/escalators for bikes. It could be taken care of pretty easily.

I’m not anti-cycling. It’s just not the right solution for every city. It’s just reality. Public transportation in those cities would be a better investment.

Im not saying its the only solution

I 100% agree that functional public transport would be ideal everywhere But I would say its also good to have rhe option to bike. And for places that are really hilly or mountainous, do what other places have done and add bike escalators or tracks so people can still bike but not be dead at the end of it. Down hill is always fun anyway

Also worth noting disabled people need public transport. Im anticar as much as anyone else, but bikes are the most extreme example – should be a valid option, maybe not the default or required option.

Get a linen hoodie and put your hood up while you ride to catch the air. Cycling takes less energy than walking, so it generates less heat. It’s cooler to ride than to walk, but you have a better breeze.
