While workers worldwide ponder how artificial intelligence might affect their livelihoods, there’s one sector where that question is no longer hypothetical. Machine translation has reduced the amount of work available to human translators and interpreters, and depressed their earnings.
I am sorry they are losing their jobs. That probably took ages to learn and it’s all that transferable.
However, translation tools are one of the better applications of LLMs. I can’t afford a translator. If I want to read an Irish website, I would be lost without translation tools. I don’t want to go back to times when they were completely unreliable
If I post something in German, that’s certainly not because I want to exclude people that don’t speak German. Usually it’s just because that’s my first language. You know, the language I speak best.
At most, it’s so I can reach slightly more people in the Dach region. But that doesn’t mean they are the only ones allowed to read that.

If they don’t offer an english version, they probably don’t want you to read it.

Irish only posting in Gaelic instead of also offering English as an alternative language is not the same as covering DACH in one take.
