When you refer to you Lebanese friends, do you call them Lebanese Christian Muslims? Do you present yourself as a Muslim to people? If they mislabel you, correct them.

If Israeli equals religious, then the bullshit antisemitism claim becomes actually valid. We don’t need to redefine words to suit the taste of a bunch of rascists and genocidal warmongers.

Does it? I thought that antisemitism was about ethnicity, not religion or nationality.

Jews are an ethnic, religious and racial group from what I understand. Israel is not a synonym for Jew, it’s a nationality. The words aren’t interchangable is my point.

You are technically correct but it’s just a talking point right-wingers use to justify their racism and discrimination against brown people.

In practice discrimination against brown people is often done under the guise of them being Muslim without that being the actual reason. Or in countries like France by exclusively picking attributes which mostly apply to brown people such as their religion and then using that as a bat against them.

It seems other people are the ones enabling that racism? People being downvoted are saying Muslim =/= being brown, people being upvoted are saying it’s the same. Conflating the two is what encourages/enables racism. It also makes it easier to spot the racists if we respect the definition and keep it separate.

And every religion can be criticized, Islam is no different.

Ya 100%. I guess we here on lemmy should be more discerning of the difference is all. It’s weird because I’m not trying to defend what the original commenter was saying (how google is somehow in the right because in one result they talk about religion and an other they talk about a nation, pure gibberish imo).

It’s also been kind of “taught” in society that being non-spanish brown = Muslim. Anecdotally, I caught myself calling my Christian Lebanese friend a Muslim when talking about her family. I corrected myself and she wasn’t offended but still, imperialist propoganda really did a number on our society.
