But I do agree, very strange to write out the full name of someone who is not a public figure or a criminal. I would not appreciate that.

Often, it might be difficult to tell the difference between a deserter and a dead soldier left rotting in a field somewhere. An article like this might mean the difference between “MIA” and “target to make an example of”.
