My love, my car: inside right-wing transport policy
theloop.ecpr.eu
external-link
Opposition to sustainable transport projects is growing, because of distributive and identity grievances familiar from broader climate policy. Flora Baumgartner looks at how transport policies are contested locally, and how they act as glue for right-wing parties, locally and at a European level

    Probably related to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petro-masculinity

Many sad sacks with little else going for them will latch onto stuff like this so they can feel good. It’s easier than actually being good.

    Car brain <—> Fascism

The link is as old as cars, very obvious, and very well understood. Cars have ALWAYS been a tool of privilege and oppression. Their rise and dominance are the result of violence, imperialism, colonialism, etc. Car dependency is a cheap, quick, disposable means of exploiting people, stealing their resources, and leaving them with nothing but debts, liabilities, destitution, environmental/health/community destruction, etc. Now it’s at the point where the planet is literally doomed…

Only a fucking fascist and/or a complete stooge would support this. It’s not some mystery. It’s clear as day.

Really fascinating side story: The first bicycle was invented in 1817 by an ardent believer in democracy - Karl [von] Drais, inventor of the Laufmaschine / Velocipede, also called Draisine.

(And even more twisted, what was probably one motivation for this was probably the experience of “the year without summer” after the explosion of volcano Tambora in Indonesia, causing climate distortion and starvation for humans and horses.)

Keep inventing and fighting for a better future!

Also, fascists and the fossil fuel industry are worldwide in a deadly symbiosis. The former have a toolbox for manipulation, propaganda and poisoning democracy. The latter have trillions of funds available for manipulation. Both hate democracy, since the fossil industry has zero future in a democratic world.

I call this pattern the oiligarchy.

Dont need to read the article: its compensation. Its always compensation

Don’t be so narrow minded! It could also be racism and a nice dash of ‘i hate the poor people’. The feeling of power when hurting others and getting to watch other struggle while the conservative drives past them in a personal carriage might be compensation enough.

Both of those interestingly almost always boil down to over compensation as well

When I talked about it with a repairman in our family they support cycling but they need cars for their job. You can’t move a fridge easily with a bike.

Depends on the definition of “easily”:

      Cool irrelevant story.

This repair person doesn’t sound like somebody who’s very right-wing or somebody who loves cars. They just sound like any of us who are forced to use cars by our dysfunctional dead-end society.

at thats why you encourage them to fight for active transport improvements. it gets more cars off the road, so there is less trafic they have to deal with, which means quicker travel for them

same with petrolheads! fewer cars mean fewer accidents, fewer queues, and fewer road hogs. the only people who actually benefit from there being more cars are car manufacturers and whoever they pay off.
