If we go down that path we’ll get another Trump within 20 years and we may not come back from the next one. Trump is just a symptom, the real disease afflicting this country is the party of Goldwater, Nixon, Reagan, Bush, and countless other traitors. Until that organization is broken every victory we see is just the country getting lucky while playing Russian roulette.
Tbh, we need more parties, remove the first-past-the-post voting system, and reverse Citizen’s United to truly remove the risk.
Part of the problem is how primaries bias candidate selection towards the more extreme party members and/or more money. In the republicans it means a drive towards fascists. In the Democratic party that’s been more of a drive towards neoliberals rather than progressives due to funding.
Reversing Citizens United would remove the neoliberal bias from the Democrat primaries and more easily allow progressives to win candidacy.
Having more party options and adding ranked choice voting or proportional democracy would allow people to ignore the “lesser of 2 evils” problem and pick candidates that better match their views, so people don’t feel pressured to vote for a fascist due to being more scared of a “socialist”.
Unfortunately neither the Republicans nor the establishment Dems want that, because they’ll both lost power and influence from having a higher number of major political parties.
On the plus side, about half the states are in the process of trying to pass laws or citizens initiatives to remove the ability for corporations to finance elections. Props to Hawai’i to figuring out the solution and demonstrating its effectiveness. That means the Citizens United is getting somewhat fixed at the moment.
The next step would be to try to get the various states to enact ranked choice voting like Alaska has. Easily the harder initiative to pull off due to misconceptions of it being too complicated and resistance from lawmakers, but I think it’s doable.
More like 6, or even 2. All that is needed is for Dems to do their usual thing and disappoint the people that voted for them. Just look what happened in Poland.
