Democrats notched an upset victory in South Carolina’s Senate race, NBC News projects, with Annie Andrews toppling Republican Sen. Darline Graham, who was appointed this year to succeed her late brother, longtime Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Andrews, a pediatrician, will be the state’s first Democratic senator in more than 20 years. Donald Trump carried South Carolina by more than 17 percentage points two years ago.

The governor’s race was just over 4 points with 1.2 points 3rd party. Way closer than I would have guessed.

I just woke up to a new day and I feel happiness for the first time in a long, long time. I know it will be short lived, but it’s worth it to see them handed their hat.

I’m not sure what’s stunning - apart from the fact that it happened in SC: Darline Graham is dumber than a sack of bricks, grossly incompetent, and even the most hardcore republican can’t possible vote for her and think she’s gonna bring any added value for South Carolinians to the senate. Not to mention the risk that she might open her dumb mouth again and shame the whole state by saying something inane.

I don’t usually count on the good sense and intelligence of republican voters, but Darline Graham is really over the top. I’m not surprised she lost.

Trump picked her though. That’s what’s hilarious about this, he’s saying that the candidates are shitty when he picked some of them, lol.

And he picked those candidates on Jan 6th riot supporter absolute loyalty basis. Graham’s “I don’t need to care about foreign policy” zombie was the perfect Trump rubber stamp candidate.

You clearly over estimate the intelligence and integrity of the people of S. Carolina. If they were as you described then this shouldn’t have even been close and yet it was a very narrow victory.

I lived in Durham from 1998 to 2005. That whole RTP area was a great place to live. Durham Bulls games. Almost always some decent live music somewhere nearby.

And then there is Ala-fucking-bama, electing as governor one of the few people in the world dumber than Trump. Alabama never fails to disappoint.

I haven’t been following that but it would be great if the GOP loses both the Senate seat and the governor’s race in Kansas.

It is pretty amazing that all the statewide elections in Georgia all went blue. Going to be grid lock there since the GA House is solidly GOP.

That should give Darline plenty of time to inform herself on national security. Maybe she’ll realize one of the biggest threats is the GOP.

They need to win leadership election. Who would be good challengers? Just below average AIPAC financing would be a start for candidates. Happens 2 months from now.

This is just the starting point. If Dems look at these results and still want to do the same old then we’ve gone nowhere.

The race was within the margin of error according to polling. Maybe a major upset from a political geography perspective but not if you believe polling.

An upset in the sense that if you heard that two years ago that SC would elect a Democrat senator in 2026 people would have laughed at you. A 17+ point shift in two years is insane.
