In an effort to stem the bleeding from the backlash about their AI usage and their CEO’s meltdown, they decide to do the exact opposite and go all in.
…I’m tired, boss.
good thing proton didnt look that good in the first place and i didnt switch to them
and their CEO’s meltdown, they decide to do the exact opposite and go all in.
I was INCHES away. They were going to be my de-google move. I had decided to pull the trigger but it was late and I know i would have been up all night dealing with it. I’d deal with it in the morning. A few more days slipped and he licked Trumps balls on twitter…
Whoopsies, not with someone elses’ 10 ft pole.
This is the same bullshit AI arms race mentality that my company spews to us and every loser company takes up. Every company feels like they need to get faster. None do. Shockingly everyone still releases at the same pace. And even then no value gets added as 80% of the features are either dark patterns or garbage.
As a consumer you’ll never see the benefits of any of this madness. I certainly haven’t. It’s NFTs all over again where people insist I need a clumsy chatbot for reasons.
As an engineer my current reality of babysitting multiple LLM threads and acting as a go between between the llm i spun up and the llm reviewing the code is demoralizing. There’s no thought in this 80% of the time. The most challenging part is finding a way to keep up tech skills and make new ones when everyone has abandoned them.
Every company feels like they need to get faster.
Well yeah, they’re capitalist institutions. If they’re not growing exponentially, they’re failing.
That’s not a snarky mockery of the attitude of leadership, that’s the logic of capital.
Yes and no.
Yes every company wants to move faster. I’m not arguing that.
What I am saying, and I didn’t articulate well, is that each company thinks that LLMs are the secret sauce to moving at speeds beyond their wildest imagination. If they can crack the code they win.
Suffice to say none do. And everyone is moving at the same speed.
Has anyone tried Startmail? They claim to be separate from Startpage in terms of ownership, so they’re supposed to be independent of System1. I don’t care that much about proton-level privacy for email and I like that I can use any mail client to connect. Plus, built-in infinite aliases is a nice bonus.
Fucking hell, it was a huge pain in the ass to migrate everything over to their service. I’m tired boss, indeed.
Fuuuck. I don’t wanna switch vpns. This shit is just tedious.
We still have NordVPN
/s
What’s wrong with NordVPN? I must have missed that one.
I was hoping for a resignation… now I have to migrate again which is annoying but “c’est la vie.”
Buy a domain, have your email address be tied to that domain and set it so the DNS record redirects to the email provider of your choice.
You can now swap email providers without having to change your email address.
This is terrible, but what is even worse is that they partnered with a Zionist Swiss university, that supports Israeli military and out criminal sanctions against students protesting against the genocide of Palestinians.
Zionist Swiss university
you men ETH Zürich?
Yes. They are collaborating with Israeli military and criminally prosecuting students protesting against the genocide of Palestinians.
The Swiss are famously always on the wrong side of history.
Neutrality only favours evil.
Could not agree more.
Holy shit. The kool aid consumption is off the charts.
This reads like every bad programmer/manager on Lemmy/Reddit that calls me a Luddite every time I push back on their wild assertions about LLMs and code. Absolute clownery.
People who care about this stuff really need to Stop looking to rent seeking corps and start using and funding collective run services with real standards instead or you’re just gonna end up repeatedly having to switch providers everytime a CEO or founder gets exposed.
Here are some examples:
Email with open signup
VPNs (free/pay what you can)
application/vetting or invite needed
I’ve been using and donating to riseup.net for 15 years and have yet to be disappointed by anything they’ve done or statements made by any members. It might take a few weeks to get an account approved but it’s well worth it.
Wow I’m learning so much stuff here amazing! I didn’t know the concept of a tech collective existed. Thanks for sharing! So glad I signed up to Lemmy too.
The fact that one of the email provider examples (disroot) had a major hardware failure few days ago and getting new emails is still not possible is not very reassuring :/ Email being reliable is even more important to me than it being secure (if they leaked at least I would be able to read them :P). And that a serious tradeoff I think one should take into account when choosing smaller, independent provider.
Nice.
I’ve used riseup in the past and agree with their worldview (for the most part) and they run the service well, but I had to leave them when I became more privacy conscious as they are headquartered in the United States. They could get a national security letter and I could be getting spied on and never know it. The NSL could direct them not to take down their warrant canary, too.
Who did you end up moving to? I wouldn’t trust any corp that claims to be immune form court orders or interference from national agencies. No one that accepts credit card payments is really outside the reach of the Feds there. I’d rather be with a provider that doesn’t try to make false claims about what they can do. If France or the UK can strong arm proton into revealing payment info, I really doubt they’d stand up any better to the USA.
If you are doing activities that might get you in trouble with a nation state please for the love of Schneier just use PGP and stop trusting ANY email provider with your messages.
Haha I ended up moving to proton, which at the time (around 10 years ago) seemed like a good idea. Now I am just going to self host my email.
Self hosting email is actually the worst though, isn’t it? Or do you have a plan for getting through spam filters?
I did it once before to satisfy the email “requirement” for nextcloud (ended up getting rid of that self hosted email though) and when I sent emails to family members’ gmail and outlook accounts they didn’t get caught in the spam filter. I am aware that this is a small sample size, but I am willing to try it out at least.
There’s no harm in trying. Would be great if it worked, ideally more people should self-host everything.
Which of these could survive being cut off from the international banking system? I need a new primary email but I recently learned about the situation with A/I and am concerned about potentially losing access. Any related thoughts you might have would also be appreciated, thanks.
I think you should also keep in mind no email provider is 100% safe. I’d trust some to shutdown rather then comply with some demands (like LavaBit did), but I would not bet on any one provider being able to survive the onslaught of late-stage capitalism/fascism.
Tech collectives are usually run entirely by volunteers and funded mainly by donations. Recently one of the best collective run providers, Autistici had to shut down due to being listed as a global terrorist org, once a provider hits that stage of being targeted by the powers that be nothing can really save them.
The real solution is to have more and many tech collectives operating on similar ethical and moral standards so as to make it difficult and impractical to silence them, thats why I tried to list several options. RiseUp has been around for decades and probably is actually “safer” due to being run out of Seattle compared to being run as a shell corp in some odd jurisdiction that lets a corp claim they arent subject to 5-eyes or other spooky tech while happily accepting visa and mastercard payments and maintaining records of all their customers.

Essentially what the Fediverse is, become the thousand servers
We really need to get away from email entirely.
in order make this inevitable transition a success
This is so frustrating because I started degoogling exactly a year ago, and had finally managed to get completely free of Google mostly thanks to the proton ecosystem… But it took a whole year! I am just settling. I am a mom of two under-10yo boys in my forties. I don’t have time for this shit. I thought I was gonna die a proton user. Fucking hell.
Holy shit. I’ve spent more than a year and I’m a fucking nerd with no kids to worry about. Hats off to you lady.
Yeah I convinced my family to move off of Gmail and now here we are. 😭
Enshitification reaches all things. Even self hosted projects which are high quality.
Goal posts are Alisha moving, incredibly frustrating. In a similar boat and I sympathize with you.
Alisha moving
I had a giggle at this autocorrect
It’s a PR statement. Don’t listen what people say, watch what they do. There were signs of proton not caring about security that much long before 2024.
I’m guessing a combination of chatbot psychosis and massive egos from their positions in the company.

Yeah ive been harping since he came out as a JD Vance dickrider, but they did a “meh to okay” face saving apology that worked.
The recent shit show is a whole new dimension of abuse and brutality, mixed with “line must go up” silicon valley bullshit at a private non profit, all while being absolutely brainfucked on AI psychosis. Somehow, he also managed to shit on Protons software engineers in a way that was universally hated by his main customers, who are clearly also software engineers.
Dude made himself an an instant nemisis to his most vocal supporters, and the PR two step ain’t doing it this time.
writing great code manually is a core skill whose time has passed.
If you’re saying people will no longer have to learn to code…
This is not the death of expertise. The LLM is fast. You are slow, but you carry with you a lifetime of experience, judgment calls, and understanding.
…then where the fuck is that expertise gonna come from?
You are also (hopefully) much less prone to hallucination and being mislead by bad or malicious inputs, and are accountable to yourself, your teammates, and to Proton in a way a model can never be. Together you can do far more, far faster than either can do alone.
AI “hallucination” is the product of something that doesn’t know what it’s doing accidentally doing something wrong despite all training in appearing competent. To correct and counteract that, you need people who actually learned what is correct and know their shit. In essence: you need people with experience in writing good code.
Even if we accepted the premise that needing to adopt AI would be the only way to survive, this logic is so full of holes that I’m wondering whether an LLM wrote it or whether that’s just the best logic Butler can deliver after outsourcing his thinking to bullshit machines.
We’re the last generation to know how to do anything, apparently. Our job is to teach the machines so well that there will be no need to pay our children for anything.

Yeah, that’s the bullshit the grifters are peddling at least
