You do realize this is old news though? Germany mostly objected to the terminology.

They just yesterday announced a huge, sweeping deal for closer ties, and the formation of a sort of “EU and friends” for other countries looking for more calm and steady economic waters.

What the other guy said regarding our government holds true though. Germany is governed by the biggest asshole since possibly hitler (there is literally no chancellor less popular than him in somewhat recent history) who is both a corporate bootlicker and brutally fiscally conservative.

Top this off with a complete lack of vision and you have this man who says no to everything except less of something. Regulation, taxes, social security, healthcare. Motherfucker does not like any of that.

Whereas they are like a 10 and a solid 3 on the asshole scale. I totally agree with the first half of your comment, but seriously what is that comparison? Old, out-of-touch, conservative multi-millionaire who upset people with speeches against a multi-millionaire in mass murder?

It’s not that I want to defend Merz, but I do want to call out this lack of nuance and respect for history here real quick…

Is what i said wrong though? The least popular chancellor since the end of ww2 to my knowledge. Of course he isnt an actual mass murderer, but i didnt say that either.

I don’t know Germany’s motivations, but the “associate member” thing was meaningless on one hand, and an insult to the EU’s relationship with the EFTA countries in the other.

Because Merz (probably still on Blackrock’s payroll) doesn’t like what his Buddy Trump doesn’t like.

How come the comments are full of conspiracy theories? Is Germany really that scary?

This is an incredibly boring and admittedly very unnecessary discussion about a name that basically doesn’t even have a meaning right now. And it was opposed because of exactly that reason on the one hand, and because it was used before - in the context of Ukraine - on the other.

That’s all there is to it. It’s politicians that don’t want the matters of Canada and Ukraine get mixed up, or to commit to some ‘membership-light’ that simply does not exist right now. Super duper boring. Go worry about something worth worrying about.

“Germany is against useless bureaucracy” should be a big headline, actually.

Because “Germany bad” is what the vast majority of Europeans thrive on.

Germany doesn’t want to diminish their power and place in the European Union.
