Anyone have any recommendations for email, drive, vpn, and password manager?

What on Earth does “build” mean? It’s a website that offers email. It’s done, what’s left to do?

But maintenance of a mature codebase doesn’t usually require much writing of code. Forcing employees to use AI to write a bunch of code in that situation is pure lunacy

People like Andy don’t give a shit about customer preference, the only way to make your voice heard is to not buy in to Proton.

Well Fuck that guy. I have a free Protonmail account. I already contacted their support and quoted back Mr. Yen’s AI standpoint and my horror at the disrespect for his employees he showed, as the reasons why I’ll be closing my account today.

“Moving fast” and accepting “AI”-generated code without careful audits by humans is not compatible with security. Period. What an asshat. I will wait with full-on Schadenfreude the headlines in a few months: ‘ProtonMail and apps hacked, thousands of accounts exposed!’. Wait and see.

EDIT: If you have a login to their forum, make sure to voice your opinion in support of forcing Andy Yen to step down immediately. Mark this issue ‘Critical’ and add your comments! https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/945460-general-ideas/suggestions/51867423-andy-yen-steps-aside

I’ve said this in a post from the previous 404 article but it’s becoming such a pain in the ass to not support assholes or fascists. Guess I’m moving again. Obscura looks interesting. Maybe vaultwarden for passwords? Mail is an entirely other problem

Self hosted is like the only way now. All of tech seems completely infested with these assholes who don’t seem capable of a shred of empathy.

Tuta is currently looking into using AI in development

The current Tuta apps are built more than 99% without AI, but we are currently testing whether it makes sense to use AI tools to help developers speed up repetitive processes and increase efficiency overall. The goal of Tuta is to bring privacy to everyone and for that the Tuta apps must become much more feature-rich and competitive with Big Tech equivalents (eg Gmail)

Damnit, that’s a huge disappointment. Obscura actually uses Mullvad as its exit node, so that might sway me away from Obscura. Why is everyone a right wing nutjob???

NymVPN is pushing their own crypto coin, which is an instant red flag in my opinion. Obscura is a US company and it is also using Mullvad exit servers themselves, so if your goal is to avoid Mullvad then it might not even be what you want. Both are also more expensive than Mullvad.

Personally I do not think that avoiding Mullvad is even necessary. Mullvad does have a track record of actual good activism and I do not think this one co-founder’s donation is enough to offset all the good things Mullvad is doing. The other co-founder distanced himself from the other guy’s donation. The company also issued a statement. The TLDR is: they always knew that they have different political views, but they are still working together to further their specific common goal of free information and privacy. https://mullvad.net/de/blog/donation-controversy

I just started my move to mailbox.org. I was going to use tuta but I don’t want their closed app ecosystem. Then I looked at runbox but their encryption is whole disk encryption not account level encryption.

ProtonVPN: Still looking at obscura since it doesn’t log anything.

MFA: I found ente and it looks interesting

      ProtonPass: either vaultwarden or Passbolt

      ProtonDrive: Peergos

Same here for mailbox. I left tuta mostly due to their shitty spam filtering, weird billing, and the hard requirement of only being able to manage emails through their app(s).

The inability to add my own pgp always irked me as well. Now I got that with mailbox, and I can use whatever mail app of my choice.

For email, I cannot recommend Port87 highly enough. Mostly because I wrote it, but also because it’s legitimately awesome. I used to absolutely hate email. Now I’m literally the “email guy” among my friend group.

I have a hard stance against the use of AI at all in Port87. No AI features, no AI training, and no AI in development.

This is why I switched to tuta and self hosting. Unfortunately I don’t have access to my router so I host everything on the tor network.

Tuta for email, nextcloud (self-hosted) for drive, I’m currently using orbot for VPN, on my laptop I use a tor proxy for http connections. My password manager is keepass and its located on my nextcloud server

I recently downgraded from proton unlimited to mail plus. I think I’ll keep my email there for now, but I’m going to move to Obscura for VPN. They’ve got a new security model which looks really intriguing and is different than other providers. No idea if they’re any good, but on its face looks better than proton.

I just saw a post on Mastodon (will add a link if I can find it) about the Windscribe CEO ranting at customers who are complaining about not being able to reach human support now that there’s an AI support bot.

    Ugh. Again? Really?

    Welp, I’m thinking:

    Vaultwarden for passwords and TOTP?

Aegis for TOTP if not vaultwarden

Recommendations for email? I use FairEmail if I need to access my old emails.

VPN? Ideally one that I can use on Graphene as well as OpenVPN for router. I’ve heard AirVPN maybe?

Storage? I just recently setup a backup on my homelab to export to Proton Drive via proton-CLI to have an offsite backup.

Set up your VPN through RethinkDNS. It supports both OpenVPN and Wireguard, and you can set up DNS block lists with it as well. It takes some setup, but you can have it up and running within 30 minutes

      Vaultwarden for passwords and TOTP?

KeePass also works as a password manager, and since it’s stored locally you can sync between devices with SyncThing. Just make sure to set up the “file versioning” settings in Syncthing to something besides “TrashCan” or “None” so you can configure how many old versions you keep as a backup and for how long before they auto-delete

Recommendations for email? I use FairEmail if I need to access my old emails.

Mailbox.org has plans that let you use your own domain for easier migration, lets you use aliases, and can be accessed via 3rd-party email managers like Thunderbird (unlike Tuta).

For storage, it depends on what you need. For now I’m mainly set up to have SyncThing manage common folders between devices, at least until I get a NAS and/or media server set up. If you already have a server I’ve heard NextCloud is pretty common, it’s supported to be a self-hosted alternative to Google Drive

I understand, and please dont take it personally.
I hope the US survives the policies of the current administration and the abuses of power that are sad hallmarks of the US tech industry.

Like i said, the approach is intriguing.

Quick question. If I released this as a self hostable but not open source project, would you run it?

I want people (like, individuals) who want to host it themselves to be able to, I just don’t want some big company to be able to spin up their own version of it to put me out of business.

I’ve been toying with the idea of a Business Source License release that converts to AGPL after the normal term. I know businesses view AGPL as untouchable, so that would help keep them away, even after the BSL conversion.
