The UK’s tax authority is assigning dedicated “customer compliance managers” to more than 200 billionaires as part of a crackdown meant to raise £500m for the public purse.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) said it had for the first time compiled a list of billionaires who are required to pay tax in the UK, regardless of whether they formally live in the country, to tackle a “wealthy tax gap” caused by those who do not pay what they ought.
200 billionaires? £500 million?
Fucking weak sauce. Do the math. One billionaire would barely miss 500mill.
200 billionaires to raise 0.5b in dodged taxes.
Each billionaire is, at most, going to see a 0.25% hit.If you earned £60k a year (a very decent wage), thats another £150 a year, £13 a month. Except that £13 (per month: a couple pints, takeout for 1 peson) is able to buy you a house (~£200k) .
1 billion is an EGREGIOUS amount of money.
The difference between 1 million and 1 billion is about 1 billion.
Like if you had £1,000 and you were able to instantly double it: you are still “about 1 million away from being a millionaire”.
If you had £1,000,000 (1 million), and you were able to instantly double it: you are still “about 1 billion away from being a billionaire”.Fuck all billionaires. Tax them more.
Make it PAINFUL to go above £250M in total assets. Also tax the megacorps. The massive American tech monopolies are hooving money out of the county. In Amazon’s case, while selling cheap stuff that doesn’t comply to our market’s regulations. All of them are bending or just breaking our laws. They aren’t too big or American for us to tackle. We can tax them properly and make them comply with the laws. Though we can’t really break them up, like should happen in a sane system.
Well I’m doing my bit, I’ve deleted my Amazon account a few years ago. You can get the same tat from the same sellers on eBay anyway.
The problem with Amazon is one their anticompetitive practices is that you must sell on their platform cheapest to allow to sell on it. Even before you taken into account their own global postal services.
These guys want voting with your wallet as their wallet is a lot bigger. If any competition looks like real competition, the monopolies buy them.
Consumer choice isn’t going to solve this.
Not to piss on your parade but one of the owners of eBay is BlackRock, and several other private equity firms. There might not be an individual name to hate, but it’s barely better.
I use it more than Amazon myself because of the free shipping, but I still don’t enjoy it
Aw dammit!
That tat you buy from Amazon or eBay is bought from AliExpress and sold at a huge markup, just FYI.
If you really do need whatever it is, might as well get it from the source.
There are very few options for UK replacements, even Argos is partially owned by Qatar or something like that.
It goes to show the best solution is to not buy any shit. With the relentless manipulative marketing that everybody is exposed to it’s a bit hard unless you go full hermit mode I guess. Something to strive for imo
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. I would advise every ody learn how to repair their appliances are part of the Reuse part of that, it means you don’t have to buy as much shit
Just a regular hitlist is fine by me
You just need to take down a few big fish with no ifs, no buts and no ‘mea culpas’…fine and claw back.
The will fall in line with enough financial force.
Given Lemmy’s obsession with taxing the rich which will obviously solve all problems, you’d think this post would be a lot more popular.
Well the problem is we’re not taxing them significantly more, we’re assigning manpower to gently cajol them into paying the small amount we do tax them.
Exactly. There’s a difference between creating new rules to tax them more, and collecting the tax they’re already supposed to be paying but aren’t.
I truly hope this pays off. Some folk say things like “but they’ll leave if we tax them”. Good! If they’re making money off us and not paying what they’re due, they’re damaging our economy and we’re better off without them. If they truly were performing a worthwhile service, then someone else will fill the void. Same goes for the corporations, who I hope are next.
Sounds like progress to me.
It is genuinely an improvement, we’re just hoping for more. I think that more or less sums up Labour at the moment actually.
