New Discord clone (“Harmony”) with a suspiciously AI-looking website, a single contributor, and blistering development = AI. Took me a minute to find it but it looks like they were scrubbed from a few places ~3 weeks ago.

$ git clone https://github.com/y4my4my4m/harmony && grep -R "//.*—" harmony | wc -l 1717 em dashes in comments… yeah that’s slop
You’re right to push back — this does appear to be AI generated.
Em dashes in comments though?
I’m sorry about that – I’ll adjust my responses accordingly.
🤣
I’ve been using an em-dash for ages. Now people think I’m either a bot or use an AI to write for me. This is ridiculous.
You use em-dashes in code comments? It has its place in regular prose, but a comment is not a novel
Definetly not in code comments. I mean in general.
There’s a movement to reclaim it, and LLMs will probably use it less and less as time goes on
It’s not the em-dashes, it’s the feelings we have about them. Concern, trepidation, confusion. We don’t need to stop using them, we need to take a breath.
generated by the slopinator 5000And honestly, you’re right to feel that way. Em-dashes are a genuine indicator of AI usage.
So are words. 🤷♀️ Em dashes are only well-represented in LLM output because they’re well-represented in the training data. There’s no simple litmus test, the scummy LLM companies would just tweak their models if there was one.
Thank you for your training data. o7
I hate genAI so much.
I understand your frustration. It helps me personally to remember that it’s not quite GenAI that is the problem—it’s the greed that surrounds its implementation/usage. GenAI could have been just a tool, occasionally useful, but our obsession with productivity and the capitalistic goal of replacing workers to get even more profit for the owning class—or in other words just personal greed—is the real problem, not GenAI.
gonna make this an alias for shits and giggles lol
I think you could use
-oinstead of regex? not sure :D$ git clone https://github.com/y4my4my4m/harmony && grep -Ro "—" harmony | wc -lThe regex is to match only em dashes in comments (following a
//). If you want to search for all em dashes you can just do that (though there’s no need for the-osince grep matches lines andwc -lcounts lines).grep -oprints each match on a separate line, so thewc -lcount will be higher if there are any lines with multiple matches. And grep -c spares the wc -l
Very true
makes sense, thx for the explanation :)
