the future is absolutely changeable. but don’t be depressed, be angry.
Not for hard determinists.
Idk if this is a joke or you think hard determinists are also always passive nihilists. That must be the philosophical equivalent of severe depression.
Determinism only technically makes the future unchangeable. Since there’s no way to know with certainty what the future will be, there’s always the possibility that, for one reason or another, you will attempt to change it from what you think it’s going to be, and discover that it was never actually going to be all along. Since humans have no way to know the future and inheritly think in terms of actions and potential consequences, and since the processes that lead to human action presumably also are determined to occur, determinism provides no incentive to act any differently from how you’d act if the future was unset.
lol “hard determinists”
Well, ignorance can certainly be bliss.
Of course you can fucking change the future.
Are you currently employed? If you go into work and tell your boss to fuck off and you quit, you have HUGELY impacted your future.
Or if you take some time for hobbies, self-improvement… just wipe down your stove to make your habitation a little more habitable - you’ve improved your future.
Determinists will find a way to shit on this, but determinists are silly creatures who have no choice in the matter.
Line from old mate Gandalf:
“So do I, and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us”
I can change my future significantly, and I can impact society’s future slightly. My worry regarding something should be proportional to how much control I have over it, I think that’s reasonable.
The future is changeable as more people get involved to change it
I think it’s Capitalism.
More people need to refuse enacting the jobs we all know are ruining the world.
If you’re building anything for a billionaire, from a mine, to a yatch, to a compound, to an AI data center: FUCKING QUIT LOUDLY.
…and we need more jobs in areas tht help the world. Planting plants, checking wildlife, doing pollution checks, checking workplaces are obeying the laws and regulations, putting uo solar panels, designing and business parks, hospitals, homes, and schools.
Perhaps most importantly if you’re starting a business doing these things. I know that hierarchical Capitalism isn’t good or ideal, but ultimately it’s driving a lot of the horrible things in the world, from lobbying to AI, and we have to turn that shit around somehow too.
“Getting involved” can’t just be about protesting or “stopping the bad direction” - at some point we need to go in the good direction too.
To be clear, I didn’t mean getting involved to only mean protesting. Things like worker strikes and the like were very much included
vote
Vote, and also organize. Voting is necessary but not sufficient on its own.
People saying you can’t change the future a month before an important midterm where we have a chance to flip the government out of the hands of a bigoted fascist who has literal camps is a pretty shitty take…
Like, this is the worst possible time for doomerism.
Even if you’re convinced voting doesn’t matter, it’s worth the effort just in case you’re wrong
A lot of the worst people in America are spending a shit ton of money to depress turnout, big nothing else vote just to spite billionaires and trump
what a shitty way to view life
“The best way to handle—to take care of the future, is to take care of the present moment. What else can you do?”

Virtual therapy is cheap as hell in Mexico. Psychologists are available. I pay like 35 a session
OP, no shade. I get the sentiment but most of your content is super depressing. Hope you feel better soon
Not with that attitude
I’m a determinist so, yeah, I agree, I don’t think you can change the future. But I don’t think it does any good to be depressed about it. We don’t know what the future’s going to be, but I don’t think it’s guaranteed to be a dystopian nightmare. I think there’s a good chance the future could be hard, but hard times can bring about a lot of important changes.
