I have spent enough time in a very poor town to know that they just don’t see this in each other. They all hide their SNAP like they hide their drinking from people at church. They don’t pick up on the “learned poverty” shit that they do which is exactly the kind of stuff they identify in the “ghetto.”
It’s all the same kind of, always having to pick from a bunch of bad choices, not having a good education, sometimes feeling culturally bound to bad habits, etc. The biggest difference as far as I can tell is that they defend and even embrace the conditions as something their father and his father and his father perfected and bestowed upon them, whereas in the hood people are still rightfully angry about being asked to integrate with their oppressors.
