It can be exploitative, but it’s not automatically so. Both parties benefit from the agreement in different ways.

Rent isn’t theft. It’s payment for a service. Whether or not that service is of value to you is a different story, but not everyone is interested in owning.
There are benefits to renting. You don’t have to be financially responsible for repairs, you don’t have to do maintenance or pay someone to do it for you, you have much less financial risk, and you can relocate much easier.
And not all landlords are rich people. I do agree that corporate ownership of residential property shouldn’t be allowed, though.

2·20 hours agoThe general population isn’t even aware that Linux exists.
I’m not saying that installing Linux is something the general population is incapable of. My comment was in response to all of the people astounded that people still use Windows.

552·2 days agoI think it’s really easy for Lemmy users to assume that the general population has the same technological interest and literacy that they do.
The Windows 11 users they are talking about are from an /r/pcmasterrace thread.
The vast, vast majority of consumers don’t give a shit. They don’t care enough to even think about whether their computer is actually secure, they don’t care that they don’t own their OS, and they don’t care that AI is being shoved in.
Their computer is a magic box to them, and they don’t care to know more.

4·2 days agoBecause the vast majority of users don’t care enough to change what they’re used to and learn something new. They just don’t care that they don’t own their computer.
Don’t underestimate human inertia.
Hell, if MS ever really starts pushing VDI, I guarantee there will be mass adoption.
