Is your start menu debloated? My prehistoric dual core i5 that isn’t supported for w11 that I forced install on handles it fine. You shouldn’t need to debloat it but once trim the fat it’s fine…

They do occasionally try to sneak shit back in with updates. I remember w10 re installing Skype every damned update.

For real I cut my teeth on vista and grew up largely with w7, I can’t hold 7 on a pedestal though.

Ok but windows didn’t make a good os with windows 7. Everybody thinks 7 was so grand because after years of updates they un fucked it enough to be good. Do u remember being stuck 2/3rds of the way in a w7 install for eternity? It simply not taking and having to start over? For the first 2 years I swear to God you couldn’t use any printer with it. We kept a vista computer around because it fucking worked better till the 7 bugs got worked out. Windows 11 is now 4 years old, and I’d argue as solid as w7 was at that age too (if we look past the shoving unneeded crap down your throat bit that all can be disabled if you’d bother). I don’t remember the early days of vista as that’s what I grew up on, but early w7 days were rough too. I’m just trying to say that I don’t remember a non half baked os being released from windows, not sure what you think im trying to straw man here.

Why not? What has changed? My start menu functions just as it did in w7, the only gripe I have is that by default it tries to search Internet before PC. Simple solution: disable web search in start menu. Once u configure the w11 start menu properly it’s no different than in precious versions! It is a shame they push the suggested apps and internet search crap but once u debloat it it’s pretty much refreshed 7 with support for modern hardware.

People have too much rose tinted vision about 7, it really wasn’t that great. I don’t see anything it does better than w11, and if you have modern hardware (I mean like 2015+) your computer is being held back by w7. Sure it’s technically more light weight but it lacks support for modern hardware and any modern computer will by choked by w7 where w11 or Linux would run significantly better.

Calm down there’s plenty of windows users in this thread lol. I’m sure Lemmy is one of the places that houses a disproportionately large amount of Linux users as most people on the fediverse are more technologically adept than the average joe!

I stopped seeing all the copilot ai crap after I removed it from my windows 11 computer. Not sure what versions of windows people on here are running but I’m glad it’s not on my PC! It is unfortunate that windows needs to be debloated if you buy home version instead of enterprise (a mistake I made), if they keep making users need to tweak stuff they’ll be better off on linux soon! Windows was supposed to be the idiot proof for office drones but it appears those days are gone.

I don’t know if he joking or not but seriously I started reading again regularly like a year ish ago and I think my attention span getting better. Just not spending as much time scrolling bullshit is a big W along with practicing a longer attention span weather it’s reading or something else. Go get a terry pratchet book !

Ah I just looked at the supported devices and I do not have one. Did lead me down a rabbit hole looking at the pine phones and minimal phones though… Hopefully next time I’m in the market for a phone there’s better options! I was not considering moving away from Android when I got my moto yet.

Thanks a ton! Saved this comment as I do have a couple old phones kicking around I could try to experiment on that aren’t terribly outdated. If I can get a bank app to work on one I’ll run it as my daily ! Ive been hesitant about Ubuntu touch because it seemed adoptions low and I worried about lack of features, but I would like to get out of dooms rolling as much so something’s probably just as well without …

The other part of the equation here is not every body has 200$ to buy a cash phone, but these days you have to have a phone. So if ur poor what do you do? Spend 200$ you don’t have on a cheap phone or walk out of verizon for 0$ with a brand new iPhone that retails for 1400$ but only cost u an extra 20$ a month for the rest of your life? It’s the same reason a lot of poor people buy new Nissans (read about how they made money on subprime loans if ur interested) and it brings into perspective how expensive it is to be poor!

I am very uneducated on the topic so bear with me here, can you run android apps on Linux mobile? Thinking banking apps here- thats the main thing holding me back. Not that I really NEED to do mobile banking mobile most days but it has saved my hide a couple times lol. Been thinking about changing the os on my Motorola, my buddy told me to try graphene but it’s pixel only. Not sure where to start but would love to de Google my phone a bit, tired of having to go and disable “features” (Gemini, assistant etc). Android these days is so bloated and sheisty it makes windows look good FFS. If the next update adds one more bs “feature” that might be the last push I need lmfao.

Could also try being frugal, there are plenty of smart phones for 200-300$ that will do everything your $1200 iPhone will do with a longer battery life. Most people I know spend more on a phone annually than I spend on my last car! And no u don’t need a new phone every year or two. Currently typing from my Moto G I got for 200$ new.

Do you currently daily Ubuntu touch? How is it?
I didn’t love zorin if I’m honest. Felt like mint but worse? Don’t take my word for it but I’m surprised to see it recommended so frequently. Been thinking of trying catchy soon as I’ve seen it mentioned a lot lately and haven’t been on a good distro hop in a minute
