What does being on Lemmy matter?

Discord is like the antithesis of Lemmy, a siloed off, inefficient, unscrapable, private, proprietary and dangerously monopolistic echo chamber. I’ve seen it swallow too many of my niches, and from my experience, it turns people into jerks.

Hence what I’m getting at is that this may not have happened without all that nonsense in the unoffiical discord.

You mean a few github accounts and a bunch of jerks on Discord, which you are bringing up on Lemmy?

If anything this is just another repudiation of Discord as a whole. I hate how its eating the internet like mad cow disease.

I feel like they are dropping the ball in the GPU space though, both on desktop and in servers.

They’renot really leveraging it. They killed the steam deck line of “small core count, GPU heavy APUs” which is why Valve hasn’t updated it and competitors seem so power hungry. They all but killed server APUs, making them mega expensive and HPC only. They’re finally coming out with a M-Pro like consumer APU, but it took until 2025, and pricing will probably be a joke just like their Radeon Pro GPUs…

And I don’t even wanna get into the AI space. They get like 99% there and then go “nah, we don’t really care about this market, let Nvidia have their monopoly and screw everyone over.” It makes me want to pull my hair out.

What’s ironic is that the local llm/diffusion communities will not touch these. They’re just too slow, and impossibley finicky to set up with models big enough for people to actually want.

AMD’s next gen could change that, but they’ve already poisoned the branding. Good job.

Apple is also much faster because the integrated graphics are actually usable for LLMs.

The base M is just a big faster than an Intel/AMD laptop if you can get their graphics working. The M Pro is 2x is fast (as its memory bus is 2x as wide). The M Max is 4x as fast.

AMD is coming out with something more competitive in 2025 though, Strix Halo.

I never liked Musk, even when he was “In.” Even the Mars colonization meme rubbed me the wrong way, as the science does not line up with that.

It felt like a cult of personality to me. He was always a fickle jerk, a mixed bag.

What drives American politics now is, rather, the unfettered power of money, much of it managed by groups outside party control who do not have to declare their funding sources and can make or break candidates depending on their willingness to follow a preordained set of policy prescriptions.

The Democrats, meanwhile, can talk all they want about serving the interests of all Americans, but they too rely on dark money representing the interests of Wall Street, big tech companies and more, and are all but doomed to come off as hypocritical and insincere as a result.

And yet, The Guardian still lives in another era.

What drives politics now is attention. That’s it. The more eyeballs you have, the more people see your message from their feed, their favorite influencer, whatever, the more support you have.

It’s that simple.

Doesn’t matter if it’s cynical, or a blatant lie, that’s irrelevant. People’s information bubbles aren’t checked or audited anymore.

Americans are not thinking of high concepts like the American Dream or isolationism/protectionism, they’re voting by how they feel, and they feel Trump is their friend because he blots out the sun. Even if the Dems were more cynical than him, they’d never have a chance unless they play that game.

It’s crazy how much fud is flying around, and legitimately buries good open research. It’s also crazy what these giant corporations are explicitly saying what they’re going to do, and that anyone buys it. TSMC’s allegedly calling Sam Altman a ‘podcast bro’ is spot on, and I’d add “manipulative vampire” to that.

Talk to any long-time resident of localllama and similar “local” AI communities who actually dig into this stuff, and you’ll find immense skepticism, not the crypto-like AI bros like you find on linkedin, twitter and such and blot everything out.

It can be if you run linux and throttle the chips. Even my older G14 last a long time, as the AMD SoCs are great, it can run fanless throttled down, and it just has a straight up bigger battery than razor thin Macs.

But again, it’s just not configured this way in most laptops, which sacrifice battery for everything else because, well, OEMs are idiots.

Honestly, a lot of that is budget.

Apple makes low clocked, very wide SoCs, and are always the first customer of the most cutting edge silicon node. This is very expensive. And Apple can eat it with their outrageous prices.

Intel (and AMD) go more for “balance,” with smaller cheaper dies and higher peak clocks. Their OEMs also “cheap out” by bundling a bunch of bloatware that also drains the battery to pad margins. You can find PCs with big batteries and better stock configs, but these are more expensive.

AMD is only just now getting into the “premium” game with the upcoming Strix Halo chip (M2 Pro-ish spec wise). Intel isn’t there yet, but there are rumors they will as well.
