Oh, they meant something alright. They meant a loss of control and, to some of them, a loss of “status”. The rich ones want to go back to a time when people “knew their place” - or in other words, when everyone who wasn’t rich was oppressed.
Just a nerd who migrated from kbin(dot)social.

On Windows, yes. PKWare is for DOS.

The fact that it’s part of the browser at all is a problem. It shouldn’t ever be in a browser. All it should be is a tool to strictly download and render W3C compliant text and images. Everything else should be a unique program - and no, Electron is not “unique” - it’s just another copy of an awful browser.

When Chrome came out, a lot of us knew that letting DoubleClick have any control over access to the Internet was a bad idea. This is another part of that.

How about they just… not include the LLM bullshit in the first place? Just make a browser that strictly renders text and images according to W3C standards?

Ah, someone else has played Singularity, I see. That was a really fun game.

That’s the secondary goal. I feel like there’s enough 3rd party tools to fix that, that I want the repairs done in the backend and trust power users and user-devs to handle the UX.

98SE would mostly work.

Wait, you didn’t just use PKWare zip & unzip? Or WinRAR?

Okay, that’s easy: remove all the LLM slop. That’ll start fixing it. Then get the ads out of the UI. Get rid of the MS account requirement, and make all updates optional. For a stretch goal, go back to making an OS that only does what the user tells it to, and doesn’t have any function to phone home without direct user input.

Or a distro using Wayland for higher end PCs.

I don’t have a problem with them selling ads. I have a problem with the insidious tracking that has become a part of those ads. Mojeek sells ads but doesn’t track you everywhere. Also, there’s SearX instances, which typically don’t sell ads or data.
They also don’t use LLMs. If you think Kagi isn’t giving away or selling your data, think again, because the LLM is doing it as a core function.

I’m not a fan of Kagi’s approach to anything, frankly. The fact that they’re charging money for a search engine, and using an LLM? Hard pass.

Yeah. I’m actually kind of upset that I have to type ‘noai’. That should be the standard.

They can’t backtrack from this. If they even try, they shouldn’t be allowed to. They’ve betrayed every ounce of morality Mozilla was founded with. This is what they’ve been since there were executives, since there was a corporation and not a non-profit community foundation. This is what they’ve been since they took money from the enemy they should have been fighting to destroy in order to make the internet a freer place.

I never remember Mozilla Corp not being awful, no. I remember them screwing up the Foundation’s work. I remember the moment the execs came in, that they ruined it. I remember that they took money from DoubleClick knowingly to become the controlled opposition. I remember that they made such a crazy rewrite of the code that it made jwz leave - and then they did it again just a few years later because DoubleClick told them to. Gotta have the controlled opposition follow the madcap “release” schedule instead of being on a responsible schedule and using meaningful versioning, after all.
And the beast shall be made legion. Its numbers shall be increased a thousand thousand fold. The din of a million keyboards like unto a great storm shall cover the earth, and the followers of Mammon shall tremble. from The Book of Mozilla, 3:31 (Red Letter Edition)
DoubleClick and the company it cancerously infected is also a follower of Mammon.

I’ve totally switched over to noai.

We need to get MUDs more popular again. But that would require getting Telnet popular again.
Not Punxsatawney Phil! Aside from his short rivalry with Murray over the starring role in Groundhog Day, he’s a good guy!
