So, this is the place where I’m going to be generally hanging out and trolling around, while my Pixelfed, Mastodon, and Blacksky accounts are going to be primarily art posting accounts, and I also have a Nooki account.
I’m also going to start to be active more on here than on lemmy.org, so I’m making this my primary Lemmy account now.
I’ll link the other socials I’m varying levels of active on below, plus my lemmy.org account which I’m demoting to my secondary account if that instance is going to be more unstable from now on.

4·6 days agoWhat if you downloaded your own videos to post to Odysee or PeerTube now in an attempt to at least have them on a non-Google platform? Will that be a DMCA violation even if you’re the one who made those videos in the first place?
Similarly, could something like this also put the existence of alternative video platforms like the aforementioned Odysee and PeerTube at risk too?
Also, could this have implications for fan works now too?

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•We created an incredibly efficient method of transport and then most of us abandoned itEnglish
2·13 days agoI thought it was talking about streetcars at first, and AFAIK most people know the story behind that by now; but if they don’t, Big Autos, GM specifically, basically killed the streetcar by straight-up taking it over via buyout.
ActivityPub, which Mastodon uses, is genuinely decentralized, and ActivityPub itself is ran by W3C, an international standards organization, while Mastodon is ran by a nonprofit, meanwhile both Bsky and ATproto are ran by a private corporation, ATproto is still semi-centralized, and since ATproto is ran by a private corporation, assuming the VC money runs out and Bsky corporate needs to start to profit somehow to stay afloat, there’s nothing stopping them from closed-sourcing ATproto (as rugpulling of this sort is legal in permissive licenses like what ATproto is licensed under) and starting to either push ads in it, paywall certain features of it, or both, for example.
Blacksky actually managed to completely split itself off from Bsky corporate infrastructure, but what if Bsky corporate gets hostile against that?

0·15 days agoOr even PeerSuite for that matter, moreso if a PeerSuite session is additionally ran through an anonymous protocol like I2P, assuming that’s possible. I mean, PeerSuite doesn’t require an account, doesn’t use servers, talks through encrypted WebRTC channels, and doesn’t leave a paper trail by default, coordinating protests is a perfect use case for it because people could start up a session to plan said protest, and then close the session without a trace when they’re done.

0·23 days agoHere’s a link to the Kiwix library download for all of Wikipedia. It’s 111GB though, so you’ll need a lot of space and also a lot of time to wait for it to download.
Note, you’ll also need Kiwix in some manner to read the zim file once it’s downloaded.
Kiwix library - All of Wikipedia - direct download link
But this’ll let you have a local copy you can reference should actual Wikipedia ever get ruined by GenAI, or worse, get taken down by hostile governments.

And Invidious, FreeTube, and Grayjay, and potentially even Odysee, PeerTube, and Rumble.
Not to mention the ramifications it might have beyond video and potentially affect the very concept of fan works. Like, imagine if some innocent fanart you drew and posted to, say, Mastodon or Pixelfed, or even to Bsky for that matter, is now a DMCA violation if this ruling is extended to apply to that sorta thing too.
