I wish this were true, but I have personally seen my credit score go down when I finished paying off accounts like car loans. A FICO credit score is a measure of how profitable a customer you are, not how likely you are to pay it back. Credit cards are a particularly expensive way to do this, but lemme assure you that taking out a mortgage will do wonders for your score.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Florida House Bill 1471, which broadens the definition of terrorist and calls for a domestic terrorist organization list, passed the Civil Justice and Claims Subcommittee by a vote of 14-3,
4·1 day agoOoo, you did much better than I. Idk how I missed that when I was responding earlier 🐑
As a holder of US debt, I like that it pays interest. It’s what’s so silly about all this debt stuff — we owe the money to ourselves (I mean that broadly, not that only Americans hold American debt, but that the beneficiaries of national debt are the broad base of investors and institutions that hold that debt). The debt is what we use as currency. The idea that carrying no debt is desirable is based on an analogy to a household budget, but households don’t issue fiat currency, and also households carry debt too!

81·1 day agoIt’s hard to tell because bills in this country are written as diffs to existing law, rather than documents unto themselves, but it looks like whatever they want:
“Domestic terrorist organization” means an organization designated as a domestic terrorist organization by the Chief of Domestic Security under s. 943.03102.
Sure but if we pay off the full debt our FICO credit score will go down. You gotta carry a balance nowadays.

Technology@lemmy.world•[The Economist] Why software stocks are getting pummelledEnglish
11·2 days agoOf course, ai will continue to improve. But it is also likely to get more expensive. At present Silicon Valley heavily subsidises its price. That cannot last for ever. OpenAI expects to burn $17bn in cash this year.
These kids should have paid better attention in D.A.R.E. The drug dealers always give you the first hit for free. (Drug dealers actually don’t give you the first hit for free, that was a person called a “pusher” and they don’t exist anymore and maybe never did but that isn’t material to my joke).

I’ve contributed a bit to owncast, and I think this is the right answer. It’s what fedi tv uses: https://theindiebeat.fm/
Mmm, interesting. Doesn’t Haskell have a monad that represents everything external to the program, for like producing I/O? In some ways I suppose that mentality makes explicit this idea you’re expressing that the environment the program runs in is implicit in the program? A software equivalent of “no man can step in the same river twice, for neither is it the same river nor is he the same man?”
Yeah me too! I think they didn’t go far enough here, because, as you note, there’s still a huge community around speedrunning and playing Super Mario Brothers. There’s a sense in which the thread of a piece of software is not ended until the last user shuts it down for the last time, but there’s no way to know when that is.

I agree with you broadly — the problem here is definitely that done is under specified here. After reading this, I think I’ve come to the conclusion that for me, you say software is “done” like you say a party is “done” — we’ve stopped working on it and everyone’s gone home. Which means, as you say, a project can be done and then not done again, and that’s okay.
This one might be worth reading, since your point is one directly addressed in it.
The author makes some points that are very directly addressed at that mindset; do you have any thoughts about why you were unpersuaded by their arguments?

I hope Macron’s eye gets better, but also if he wants to make those shades a more prominent part of his look, I’m here for it.
