Trans people, as well as everyone else, have suffered under Abbott because he lost sight of what Texans want instead of what the national Democratic Party wanted. Regardless of your feelings about gun control, I think we can all agree that he could have prevented a lot of the damage that Abbott has gone on to do if he’d just picked his battles better.
I’d wager that the Talarico you’d see after the election is a little more vocal than the version he needs to be to have a shot at getting elected. Still you have to admit it’s pretty crappy to hear someone who once went to bat for trans people, walk it back. I still think he’s a good candidate, better than Paxton and better than other Texas Democrats like Cuellar.
Oh yeah, it’s crappy, but I’d rather he do that, win, and go on to support trans rights than say the whole truth now, lose, and be a footnote in history while Ken Paxton brings about a full blown holocaust for anyone who isn’t white, male, cisgender, and conservative.
Texas politics is really messy—I have been saturated in it my entire life. You’ve got to appeal to insane cowboys and city hippies at the same time to win as a democrat, and that’s no easy task. To steal a line from Primary Colors:
