    His base love being told the nation is terrible. They think it shows he is being honest with them.

    And I agree the nation is in a terrible state, of course. But my criticism of the US is an attempt to improve it, where his is just conman instinct that a truth plus a lie goes down easier than two lies.

      This makes total sense to me, coming from a mostly conservative family. They are so miserable and negative about everything, that negativity is how they communicate.

      Their identity is based on the things they don’t like, their conversations consist of complaints and gossip, and their politics revolve around who they perceive needs to be knocked down a peg.

      So I think it goes beyond them thinking he’s honest. His constant bitching, bullshitting, and punching down in place of solutions – they make him feel familiar and like he is one of them. (even though we know he hates them just as much as he hates everybody else)
