A troubling number of fatal hit-and-runs this summer had street safety advocates calling for the mayor to release his administration's plan to reduce traffic deaths. He released one on Tuesday that centered on a crackdown on reckless motorists.
It’s crazy to me why anyone needs a car that goes beyond 80. In the city, you don’t even need to actually go that fast and won’t likely have the opportunity, although as I’m told often YMMV.
I know this post isn’t really talking about speeding deaths but speeding is still reckless.
I would be in support of my state making a deal with the auto industry:
All speed limits get increased by 10% (rounded to the closest 5mph). I’d even throw in 15%.
In exchange, all new cars need to have a speed governor.
I know the privacy people are going to roast me on me wanting the state government to track every car at all times but I am sure we can find solutions where the car knows where it is without the government knowing.
Having the restriction for a car not to be able to go over 40 in a city where the speed limit on all non-expressways is 25 would be a very very good start.
In a town or city? Absolutly never need to go over 60mph
But those interstates in the middle of nowhere should be raised to 120, separate the lanes and theres literally fuck all to hit for hundreds of miles. That way it would cut down 11hrs to about 7.5 hours, making my trip to visit a buddy doable on a weekend off of work
Tangent here, but something I have never understood quite frankly is why cars are sold being able to go past 80mph in the first place.
Granted that is probably not the factor to worry about in cases like in New York, but I recall hearing about this speed limiting enforcement for repeat offenders in VA:

Speed governors which adapt to a speed limit will not work. Just do traffic calming and you can get rid of speed limits

High speed rail would also fix this problem…
People hit 90 on the highway in remote areas (out west, Maine, etc.) pretty regularly without being reckless
