What makes this notable is this part:
Troster said the new bike lanes weren’t halted by recent provincial rules limiting such projects since they won’t remove any traffic lanes.
I guess the secret is to have dedicated parking spots instead of traffic lanes with parking on them!
I didn’t expect to hear about this through the Lemmy fuckcars community but hell yeah! I live in this area and this is great
Even though I am a noted hater of Ottawa as a city, I just had to celebrate this achievement. Isn’t it amazing what people can accomplish when they put their minds to it and prioritize safety and livability?
Absolutely yeah. It sucks because If Ottawa wasn’t ruled by the suburbs, we’d have a lot more of this. We could have functioning transit and bike lanes but noope that might increase property taxes a tiny bit and we cant have that
It’s kinda weird to see a city experience traffic violence, have a vote to mitigate a high risk route, and then have the vote pass unanimously. I feel like it should work that way, but its refreshing to see it happen.
I can assure you it ain’t normal in Ottawa and I am incredibly surprised by it. Beyond happy though because I bike and walk down Gladstone frequently
