Monmouth County Commissioner Director Tom Arnone saw those cuts coming and introduced a plan to help towns improve safety features along walking and biking routes to school by applying for grants.
“The right striping, the right signage, the right ability for municipalities and school boards to get the grants they can get,” said Arnone.
Arnone says it won’t solve the funding issues but will make routes to and from school safer. The grants will cover simple safety features like enhanced crosswalks and added flashing lights.
I feel like having a safe path for children to walk to school may be a prerequisite for having them walk. They’re likely intending for parents to deliver their children to school.
They did this in my city, but the furthest point from school anyone lives is, like a bit more than a mile and there is reasonably functional bus transit and bike lanes. It’s been a bit of a non-issue here. I could imagine in many other cities it would be a problem.
