Monmouth County Commissioner Director Tom Arnone saw those cuts coming and introduced a plan to help towns improve safety features along walking and biking routes to school by applying for grants.
“The right striping, the right signage, the right ability for municipalities and school boards to get the grants they can get,” said Arnone.
Arnone says it won’t solve the funding issues but will make routes to and from school safer. The grants will cover simple safety features like enhanced crosswalks and added flashing lights.
I feel like having a safe path for children to walk to school may be a prerequisite for having them walk. They’re likely intending for parents to deliver their children to school.
Having a 2 mile walk is a bit much for kindergardeners but I think overall its fine - provided there is money put into making the routes walkable(which im not holding my breath for)
2 miles is fine, kids are perfectly capable.
Someone should introduce the Americans to the bicycle… I commute 6km by bike, and that’s considered a short commute. And before you complain about missing infrastructure: a lot of our bike paths are just painted on as well.
American here. I just googled “bicycle” and holy shit, that would solve the “last mile” problem, improve health, and make more real estate available for housing. I’ll write the President to inform him of this technology this afternoon.
