I’d say, in addition to what the other reply said, that signs have been pointing to them moving in a subscription focused direction. Most notably Xbox game pass, office, and the increasing enshittification of Windows in general with each new version.
I’m skeptical about this seeing as there are also articles pointing out that this is fake news.

They added sources through the article, including a youtube interview between two Microsoft execs, so I’d say its a least plausible.
