Essentially I am contrasting it with Canadian supply managed chicken (which is one thing the USA has been long trying to make Canada give up), which allows…

    • smaller flocks that can more easily manage biosecurity
    • an enforced ban on growth hormones
    • less of a stranglehold from the meatpackers
    • avoids a race to the bottom for quality to compete on price, meaning stable prices and consistent quality

In Canada, there is a set number of chickens.

Sure it’s worse in the US, but that’s not saying a lot. The meat, dairy, egg, etc. industries aren’t that much rosier in Canada or anywhere in the world

There’s still plenty of factory farming Canada, practices like Gestation Crates are still dominant at 70% of pig farms in Canada, there’s an active ongoing lawsuit about Ontario’s ag-gag laws at the Canadian Supreme court right now, etc.

Hogs aren’t supply managed and the difference is apparent. And absolutely, i’m no vegan but fuck Doug Ford’s industry kowtow with the ag-gag law.

      and consistent quality

Kinda wild that most store-bought chicken doesn’t taste good at all. At least it’s not making us sick. 😄

I don’t diss supply mgmt. Just personal taste opinion. I think supply mgmt is very important for us and its benefits are obvious.

Chicken parts sold in the store in the US are absolutely monstrous compared to Canada, the typical grocery store chicken thigh is half the size in Canada.

That’s crazy. The Canadian ones are monstrous compared to what we used to grow in our European backyard thirty years ago.
